1 わが心生命を厭ふ 然ば我わが憂愁を包まず言あらはし わが魂神の苦きによりて語はん My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
2 われ神に申さん 我を罪ありしとしたまふ勿れ 何故に我とあらそふかを我に示したまへ I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
3 なんぢ虐遇を爲し 汝の手の作を打棄て惡き者の謀計を照すことを善としたまふや Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
4 汝は肉眼を有たまふや 汝の觀たまふ所は人の觀るがごとくなるや Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?
5 なんぢの日は人間の日のごとく 汝の年は人の日のごとくなるや Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man’s days,
6 何とて汝わが愆を尋ねわが罪をしらべたまふや That thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?
7 されども汝はすでに我の罪なきを知たまふ また汝の手より救ひいだし得る者なし Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.
8 汝の手われをいとなみ我をことごとく作れり 然るに汝今われを滅ぼしたまふなり Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.
9 請ふ記念たまへ 汝は土塊をもてすてるがごとくに我を作りたまへり 然るに復われを塵に歸さんとしたまふや Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?
10 汝は我を乳のごとく斟ぎ牛酪のごとくに凝しめたまひしに非ずや Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
11 汝は皮と肉とを我に着せ骨と筋とをもて我を編み Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.
12 生命と恩惠とをわれに授け我を眷顧てわが魂神を守りたまへり Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.
13 然はあれど汝これらの事を御心に藏しおきたまへり 我この事汝の心にあるを知る And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.
14 我もし罪を犯さば汝われをみとめてわが罪を赦したまはじ If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.
15 我もし行状あしからば禍あらん 假令われ義かるとも我頭を擧じ 其は我は衷に羞耻充ち 眼にわが患難を見ればなり If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;
16 もし頭を擧なば獅子のごとくに汝われを追打ち 我身の上に復なんぢの奇しき能力をあらはしたまはん For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.
17 汝はしばしば證する者を入かへて我を攻め 我にむかひて汝の震怒を増し新手に新手を加へて我を攻めたまふ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
18 何とて汝われを胎より出したまひしや 然らずば我は息絶え目に見らるること無く Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!
19 曾て有ざりし如くならん 即ち我は胎より墓に持ゆかれん I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.
20 わが日は幾時も无きに非ずや 願くは彼姑らく息て我を離れ我をして少しく安んぜしめんことを Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
21 我が往て復返ることなきその先に斯あらしめよ 我は暗き地死の蔭の地に往ん Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
22 この地は暗くして晦冥に等しく死の蔭にして區分なし 彼處にては光明も黑暗のごとし A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.
