1 この後イエス、ガリラヤのうちを巡りゐ給ふ、ユダヤ人の殺さんとするに因りて、ユダヤのうちを巡ることを欲し給はぬなり。 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 ユダヤ人の假廬の祭ちかづきたれば、 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
3 兄弟たちイエスに言ふ『なんぢの行ふ業を弟子たちにも見せんために、此處を去りてユダヤに往け。 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
4 誰にても自ら顯れんことを求めて、隱に業をなす者なし。汝これらの事を爲すからには、己を世にあらはせ』 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
5 是その兄弟たちもイエスを信ぜぬ故なり。 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
6 ここにイエス言ひ給ふ『わが時はいまだ到らず、汝らの時は常に備れり。 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7 世は汝らを憎むこと能はねど我を憎む、我は世の所作の惡しきを證すればなり。 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
8 なんぢら祭に上れ、わが時いまだ滿たねば、我は今この祭にのぼらず』 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
9 かく言ひて尚ガリラヤに留り給ふ。 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10 而して兄弟たちの祭にのぼりたる後、あらはならで潜びやかに上り給ふ。 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
11 祭にあたりユダヤ人らイエスを尋ねて『かれは何處に居るか』と言ふ。 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 また群衆のうちに囁く者おほくありて、或は『イエスは善き人なり』といひ、或は『いな、群衆を惑すなり』と言ふ。 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
13 されどユダヤ人を懼るるに因りて、誰もイエスのことを公然に言はず。 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 祭も、はや半となりし頃、イエス宮にのぼりて教へ給へば、 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 ユダヤ人あやしみて言ふ『この人は學びし事なきに、如何にして書を知るか』 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 イエス答へて言ひ給ふ『わが教はわが教にあらず、我を遣し給ひし者の教なり。 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 人もし御意を行はんと欲せば、此の教の神よりか、我が己より語るかを知らん。 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 己より語るものは己の榮光をもとむ、己を遣しし者の榮光を求むる者は眞なり、その中に不義なし。 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 モーセは汝らに律法を與へしにあらずや、されど汝 等のうちに律法を守る者なし。汝ら何ゆゑ我を殺さんとするか』 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20 群衆こたふ『なんぢは惡鬼に憑かれたり、誰が汝を殺さんとするぞ』 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 イエス答へて言ひ給ふ『われ一つの業をなしたれば、汝 等みな怪しめり。 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 モーセは汝らに割禮を命じたり（これはモーセより起りしとにあらず、先祖より起りしなり）この故に汝ら安息 日にも人に割禮を施す。 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 モーセの律法の廢らぬために、安息 日に人の割禮を受くる事あらば、何ぞ安息 日に人の全身を健かにせしとて我を怒るか。 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24 外貌によりて裁くな、正しき審判にて審け』 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 ここにエルサレムの或 人々いふ『これは人々の殺さんとする者ならずや。 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26 視よ、公然に語るに、之に對して何をも言ふ者なし、司たちは此の人のキリストたるを眞に認めしならんか。 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
27 されど我らは此の人の何處よりかを知る、キリストの來る時には、その何處よりかを知る者なし』 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
28 ここにイエス宮にて教へつつ呼はりて言ひ給ふ『なんぢら我を知り、亦わが何處よりかを知る。されど我は己より來るにあらず、眞の者ありて我を遣し給へり。汝らは彼を知らず、 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
29 我は彼を知る。我は彼より出で、彼は我を遣し給ひしに因りてなり』 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
30 ここに人々イエスを捕へんと謀りたれど、彼の時いまだ到らぬ故に手出する者なかりき。 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
31 かくて群衆のうち多くの人々イエスを信じて『キリスト來るとも、此の人の行ひしより多く徴を行はんや』と言ふ。 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
32 イエスにつきて群衆のかく囁くことパリサイ人の耳に入りたれば、祭司長・パリサイ人ら彼を捕へんとて下役どもを遣ししに、 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
33 イエス言ひ給ふ『我なほ暫く汝らと偕に居り、而してのち我を遣し給ひし者の御許に往く。 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
34 汝ら我を尋ねん、されど逢はざるべし、汝 等わが居る處に往くこと能はず』 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
35 ここにユダヤ人ら互に云ふ『この人われらの逢ひ得ぬいづこに往かんとするか、ギリシヤ人のうちに散りをる者に往きて、ギリシヤ人を教へんとするか。 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
36 その言に「なんぢら我を尋ねん、然れど逢はざるべし、汝ら我がをる處に往くこと能はず」と云へるは何ぞや』 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
37 祭の終の大なる日に、イエス立ちて呼はりて言ひたまふ『人もし渇かば我に來りて飮め。 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 我を信ずる者は、聖書に云へるごとく、その腹より活ける水、川となりて流れ出づべし』 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 これは彼を信ずる者の受けんとする御靈を指して言ひ給ひしなり。イエス未だ榮光を受け給はざれば、御靈いまだ降らざりしなり。 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
40 此 等の言をききて群衆のうちの或 人は『これ眞にかの預言者なり』といひ、 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
41 或 人は『これキリストなり』と言ひ、又ある人は『キリストいかでガリラヤより出でんや、 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
42 聖書に、キリストはダビデの裔またダビデの居りし村ベツレヘムより出づと云へるならずや』と言ふ。 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 斯くイエスの事によりて、群衆のうちに紛爭おこりたり。 So there was a division among the people because of him.
44 その中には、イエスを捕へんと欲する者もありしが、手出する者なかりき。 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45 而して下役ども、祭司長・パリサイ人らの許に歸りたれば、彼ら問ふ『なに故かれを曳き來らぬか』 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
46 下役ども答ふ『この人の語るごとく語りし人は未だなし』 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
47 パリサイ人 等これに答ふ『なんぢらも惑されしか、 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
48 司たち又はパリサイ人のうちに、一人だに彼を信ぜし者ありや、 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 律法を知らぬこの群衆は詛はれたる者なり』 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
50 彼 等のうちの一人にてさきにイエスの許に來りしニコデモ言ふ、 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
51 『われらの律法は、先その人に聽き、その爲すところを知るにあらずば、審く事をせんや』 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
52 かれら答へて言ふ『なんぢもガリラヤより出でしか、査べ見よ、預言者はガリラヤより起る事なし』 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53 ［斯くておのおの己が家に歸れり。 And every man went unto his own house.
