1 イエス・キリストの使徒ペテロ、書をポント、ガラテヤ、カパドキヤ、アジヤ、ピテニヤに散りて宿れる者、 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2 即ち父なる神の預じめ知り給ふところに隨ひて、御靈の潔により柔順ならんため、イエス・キリストの血の灑を受けんために選ばれたる者に贈る。願はくは恩惠と平安と汝らに増さんことを。 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
3 讃むべきかな、我らの主イエス・キリストの父なる神、その大なる憐憫に隨ひ、イエス・キリストの死人の中より甦へり給へることに由り、我らを新に生れしめて生ける望を懷かせ、 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 汝らの爲に天に蓄へある、朽ちず汚れず萎まざる嗣業を繼がしめ給へり。 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 汝らは終のときに顯れんとて備りたる救を得んために、信仰によりて神の力に護らるるなり。 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 この故に汝ら今しばしの程さまざまの試煉によりて憂へざるを得ずとも、なほ大に喜べり。 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 汝らの信仰の驗は、壞つる金の火にためさるるよりも貴くして、イエス・キリストの現れ給ふとき譽と光榮と尊貴とを得べきなり。 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 汝らイエスを見しことなけれど之を愛し、今 見ざれども之を信じて、言ひがたく、かつ光榮ある喜悦をもて喜ぶ。 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
9 これ信仰の極、すなはち靈魂の救を受くるに因る。 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 汝らの受くべき恩惠を預言したる預言者たちは、この救につきて具に尋ね査べたり。 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 即ち彼らは己が中に在すキリストの靈の、キリストの受くべき苦難および其の後の榮光を預じめ證して、何時のころ如何なる時を示し給ひしかを査べたり。 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 彼 等はその勤むるところ己のためにあらず、汝らの爲なることを默示によりて知れり。即ち天より遣され給へる聖 靈によりて福音を宣ぶる者どもの、汝らに傳へたる所にして、御使たちも之を懇ろに視んと欲するなり。 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
13 この故に、なんぢら心の腰に帶し、愼みてイエス・キリストの現れ給ふときに、與へられんとする恩惠を疑はずして望め。 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 從順なる子 等の如くして、前の無知なりし時の慾に效はず、 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 汝らを召し給ひし聖者に效ひて、自ら凡ての行状に潔かれ。 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 録して『われ聖なれば、汝らも聖なるべし』とあればなり。 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17 また偏ることなく各人の業に隨ひて審きたまふ者を父と呼ばば、畏をもて世に寓る時を過せ。 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
18 なんぢらが先祖たちより傳はりたる虚しき行状より贖はれしは、銀や金のごとき朽つる物に由るにあらず、 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 瑕なく汚點なき羔羊の如きキリストの貴き血に由ることを知ればなり。 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 彼は世の創の前より預じめ知られたまひしが、この末の世に現れ給へり。 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
21 これは彼を死人の中より甦へらせて之に榮光を與へ給ひし神を、彼によりて信ずる汝らの爲なり、この故に汝らの信仰と希望とは神に由れり。 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 なんぢら眞理に從ふによりて靈魂をきよめ、僞りなく兄弟を愛するに至りたれば、心より熱く相 愛せよ。 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 汝らは朽つる種に由らで、朽つることなき種、すなはち神の活ける限りなく保つ言に由りて新に生れたればなり。 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 『人はみな草のごとく、その光榮はみな草の花の如し、草は枯れ、花は落つ。 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 されど主の御言は永遠に保つなり』汝らに宣傅へたる福音の言は即ちこれなり。 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
