1 我キリストに在りて眞をいひ虚僞を言はず、 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2 我に大なる憂あることと心に絶えざる痛あることとを、我が良心も聖 靈によりて證す。 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3 もし我が兄弟わが骨肉の爲にならんには、我みづから詛はれてキリストに棄てらるるも亦ねがふ所なり。 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4 彼 等はイスラエル人にして、彼らには神の子とせられたることと、榮光と、もろもろの契約と、授けられたる律法と、禮拜と、もろもろの約束とあり。 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5 先祖たちも彼 等のものなり、肉によれば、キリストも彼 等より出で給ひたり。キリストは萬物の上にあり、永遠に讃むべき神なり、アァメン。 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6 それ神の言は廢りたるに非ず。イスラエルより出づる者みなイスラエルなるに非ず。 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7 また彼 等はアブラハムの裔なればとて皆その子たるに非ず『イサクより出づる者は、なんぢの裔と稱へらるべし』とあり。 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 即ち肉の子らは神の子らにあらず、ただ約束の子 等のみ其の裔と認めらるるなり。 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9 約束の御言は是なり、曰く『時ふたたび巡り來らば、我きたりてサラに男子あらん』と。 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10 然のみならず、レベカも我らの先祖イサク一人によりて孕りたる時、 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 その子いまだ生れず、善も惡もなさぬ間に、神の選の御旨は動かず、 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 行爲によらで召す者によらん爲に『兄は次弟に事ふべし』とレベカに宣へり。 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 『われヤコブを愛しエザウを憎めり』と録されたる如し。 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 さらば何をか言はん、神には不義あるか。決して然らず。 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 モーセに言ひ給ふ『われ憐まんとする者をあはれみ、慈悲を施さんとする者に慈悲を施すべし』と。 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 されば欲する者にも由らず、走る者にも由らず、ただ憐みたまふ神に由るなり。 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 パロにつきて聖書に言ひ給ふ『わが汝を起したるは此の爲なり、即ち我が能力を汝によりて顯し、且わが名の全世界に傳へられん爲なり』と。 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 されば神はその憐まんと欲する者を憐み、その頑固にせんと欲する者を頑固にし給ふなり。 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 さらば汝あるいは我に言はん『神なんぞなほ人を咎め給ふか、誰かその御定に悖る者あらん』 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 ああ人よ、なんぢ誰なれば神に言ひ逆ふか、造られしもの造りたる者に對ひて『なんぢ何ぞ我を斯く造りし』と言ふべきか。 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 陶工は同じ土塊をもて、此を貴きに用ふる器とし、彼を賤しきに用ふる器とするの權なからんや。 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22 もし神、怒をあらはし權力を示さんと思しつつも、なほ大なる寛容をもて、滅亡に備れる怒の器を忍び、 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 また光榮のために預じめ備へ給ひし憐憫の器に對ひて、その榮光の富を示さんとし給ひしならば如何に。 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 この憐憫の器は我等にして、ユダヤ人の中よりのみならず、異邦人の中よりも召し給ひしものなり。 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 ホゼヤの書に『我わが民たらざる者を我が民と呼び、愛せられざる者を愛せらるる者と呼ばん、 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26 「なんぢら我が民にあらず」と言ひし處にて、彼らは活ける神の子と呼ばるべし』と宣へる如し。 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27 イザヤもイスラエルに就きて叫べり『イスラエルの子孫の數は海の砂のごとくなりとも、救はるるはただ殘の者のみならん。 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28 主、地の上に御言をなし了へ、これを遂げ、これを速かにし給はん』 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29 また『萬軍の主われらに裔を遺し給はずば、我等ソドムの如くになり、ゴモラと等しかりしならん』とイザヤの預言せしが如し。 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30 然らば何をか言はん、義を追ひ求めざりし異邦人は義を得たり、即ち信仰による義なり。 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 イスラエルは義の律法を追ひ求めたれど、その律法に到らざりき。 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 何の故か、かれらは信仰によらず、行爲によりて追ひ求めたる故なり。彼らは躓く石に躓きたり。 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 録して『視よ、我つまづく石さまたぐる岩をシオンに置く、之に依頼む者は辱しめられじ』とあるが如し。 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
