| 1 | 神の僕またイエス・キリストの使徒パウロ――我が使徒となれるは、永遠の生命の望に基きて神の選民の信仰を堅うし、また彼らを敬虔にかなふ眞理を知る知識に至らしめん爲なり。 | Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; |
| 2 | 僞りなき神は、創世の前に、この生命を約束し給ひしが、 | In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; |
| 3 | 時いたりて御言を宣教にて顯さんとし、その宣教を我らの救主たる神の命令をもて我に委ねたまへり。―― | But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; |
| 4 | われ書を同じ信仰によりて我が眞實の子たるテトスに贈る。願はくは父なる神および我らの救主キリスト・イエスより賜ふ恩惠と平安と、汝にあらんことを。 | To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. |
| 5 | わが汝をクレテに遣し置きたる故は、汝をして缺けたる所を正し、且わが命ぜしごとく町々に長老を立てしめん爲なり。 | For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: |
| 6 | 長老は責むべき所なく、一人の女の夫にして、子女もまた放蕩をもて訴へらるる事なく、服從せぬことなき信者たるべきなり。 | If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. |
| 7 | それ監督は神の家 司なれば、責むべき所なく、放縱ならず、輕々しく怒らず、酒を嗜まず、人を打たず、恥づべき利を取らず、 | For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; |
| 8 | 反つて旅人を懇ろに待ひ、善を愛し、謹愼あり、正しく潔く節制にして、 | But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; |
| 9 | 教に適ふ信ずべき言を守る者たるべし。これ健全なる教をもて人を勸め、かつ言ひ逆ふ者を言ひ伏することを得んためなり。 | Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. |
| 10 | 服從せず、虚しき事をかたり、人の心を惑す者おほし、殊に割禮ある者のうちに多し。 | For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: |
| 11 | 彼らの口を箝がしむべし、彼らは恥づべき利を得んために、教ふまじき事を教へて全家を覆へすなり。 | Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. |
| 12 | クレテ人の中なる或る預言者いふ『クレテ人は常に虚僞をいふ者、あしき獸、また懶惰の腹なり』 | One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. |
| 13 | この證は眞なり。されば汝きびしく彼らを責めよ、 | This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; |
| 14 | 彼らがユダヤ人の昔話と眞理を棄てたる人の誡命とに心を寄することなく、信仰を健全にせん爲なり。 | Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. |
| 15 | 潔き人には凡ての物きよく、汚れたる人と不 信者とには一つとして潔き物なし、彼らは既に心も良心も汚れたり。 | Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. |
| 16 | みづから神を知ると言ひあらはせど、其の行爲にては神を否む。彼らは憎むべきもの、服はぬ者、すべての善き業に就きて棄てられたる者なり。 | They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. |
