In Praise of Wisdom
Listen! Wisdom is calling out. Reason is making herself heard.
Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
On the hilltops near the road and at the crossroads she stands. She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
At the entrance to the city, beside the gates, she calls: She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
“I appeal to all of you; I call to everyone on earth. Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
Are you immature? Learn to be mature. Are you foolish? Learn to have sense. O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
Listen to my excellent words; all I tell you is right. Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
What I say is the truth; lies are hateful to me. For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
Everything I say is true; nothing is false or misleading. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
To those with insight, it is all clear; to the well-informed, it is all plain. They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
Choose my instruction instead of silver; choose knowledge rather than the finest gold. Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
“I am Wisdom, I am better than jewels; nothing you want can compare with me. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
I am Wisdom, and I have insight; I have knowledge and sound judgment. I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
To honor the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil ways and false words. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
I make plans and carry them out. I have understanding, and I am strong. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
I help kings to govern and rulers to make good laws. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
Every ruler on earth governs with my help, officials and nobles alike. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
I love those who love me; whoever looks for me can find me. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
I have riches and honor to give, prosperity and success. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
What you get from me is better than the finest gold, better than the purest silver. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
I walk the way of righteousness; I follow the paths of justice, I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
giving wealth to those who love me, filling their houses with treasures. That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
“The Lord created me first of all, the first of his works, long ago. The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
I was made in the very beginning, at the first, before the world began. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
I was born before the oceans, when there were no springs of water. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
I was born before the mountains, before the hills were set in place, Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
before God made the earth and its fields or even the first handful of soil. While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
I was there when he set the sky in place, when he stretched the horizon across the ocean, When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
when he placed the clouds in the sky, when he opened the springs of the ocean When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
and ordered the waters of the sea to rise no further than he said. I was there when he laid the earth's foundations. When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
I was beside him like an architect, I was his daily source of joy, always happy in his presence— Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
happy with the world and pleased with the human race. Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
“Now, young people, listen to me. Do as I say, and you will be happy. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
Listen to what you are taught. Be wise; do not neglect it. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
Those who listen to me will be happy— those who stay at my door every day, waiting at the entrance to my home. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
Those who find me find life, and the Lord will be pleased with them. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.
Those who do not find me hurt themselves; anyone who hates me loves death.” But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
