|---|---|---|
Better to eat a dry crust of bread with peace of mind than have a banquet in a house full of trouble. | Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
A shrewd servant will gain authority over a master's worthless son and receive a part of the inheritance. | A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
Gold and silver are tested by fire, and a person's heart is tested by the Lord. | The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.
Evil people listen to evil ideas, and liars listen to lies. | A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
If you make fun of poor people, you insult the God who made them. You will be punished if you take pleasure in someone's misfortune. | Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Grandparents are proud of their grandchildren, just as children are proud of their parents. | Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
Respected people do not tell lies, and fools have nothing worthwhile to say. | Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
Some people think a bribe works like magic; they believe it can do anything. | A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
If you want people to like you, forgive them when they wrong you. Remembering wrongs can break up a friendship. | He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
An intelligent person learns more from one rebuke than a fool learns from being beaten a hundred times. | A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
Death will come like a cruel messenger to wicked people who are always stirring up trouble. | An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
It is better to meet a mother bear robbed of her cubs than to meet some fool busy with a stupid project. | Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
If you repay good with evil, you will never get evil out of your house. | Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
The start of an argument is like the first break in a dam; stop it before it goes any further. | The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
Condemning the innocent or letting the wicked go—both are hateful to the Lord. | He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.
It does a fool no good to spend money on an education, because he has no common sense. | Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
Friends always show their love. What are relatives for if not to share trouble? | A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Only someone with no sense would promise to be responsible for someone else's debts. | A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
To like sin is to like making trouble. If you brag all the time, you are asking for trouble. | He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
Anyone who thinks and speaks evil can expect to find nothing good—only disaster. | He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
There is nothing but sadness and sorrow for parents whose children do foolish things. | He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time. | A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Corrupt judges accept secret bribes, and then justice is not done. | A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
An intelligent person aims at wise action, but a fool starts off in many directions. | Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
Foolish children bring grief to their fathers and bitter regrets to their mothers. | A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
It is not right to make an innocent person pay a fine; justice is perverted when good people are punished. | Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
Those who are sure of themselves do not talk all the time. People who stay calm have real insight. | He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
After all, even fools may be thought wise and intelligent if they stay quiet and keep their mouths shut. | Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
