1
Jesus and His Brothers
After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee; he did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jewish authorities there were wanting to kill him.
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 The time for the Festival of Shelters was near, Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
3 so Jesus' brothers said to him, “Leave this place and go to Judea, so that your followers will see the things that you are doing. His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
4 People don't hide what they are doing if they want to be well known. Since you are doing these things, let the whole world know about you!” ( For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
5 Not even his brothers believed in him.) For neither did his brethren believe in him.
6 Jesus said to them, “The right time for me has not yet come. Any time is right for you. Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I keep telling it that its ways are bad. The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
8 You go on to the festival. I am not going to this festival, because the right time has not come for me.” Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
9 He said this and then stayed on in Galilee. When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10
Jesus at the Festival of Shelters
After his brothers had gone to the festival, Jesus also went; however, he did not go openly, but secretly.
But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
11 The Jewish authorities were looking for him at the festival. “Where is he?” they asked. Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 There was much whispering about him in the crowd. “He is a good man,” some people said. “No,” others said, “he fools the people.” And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
13 But no one talked about him openly, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 The festival was nearly half over when Jesus went to the Temple and began teaching. Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 The Jewish authorities were greatly surprised and said, “How does this man know so much when he has never been to school?” And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 Jesus answered, “What I teach is not my own teaching, but it comes from God, who sent me. Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 Whoever is willing to do what God wants will know whether what I teach comes from God or whether I speak on my own authority. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 Those who speak on their own authority are trying to gain glory for themselves. But he who wants glory for the one who sent him is honest, and there is nothing false in him. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 Moses gave you the Law, didn't he? But not one of you obeys the Law. Why are you trying to kill me?” Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20 “You have a demon in you!” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?” The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 Jesus answered, “I performed one miracle, and you were all surprised. Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 Moses ordered you to circumcise your sons (although it was not Moses but your ancestors who started it), and so you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 If a boy is circumcised on the Sabbath so that Moses' Law is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24 Stop judging by external standards, and judge by true standards.” Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25
Is He the Messiah?
Some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Isn't this the man the authorities are trying to kill?
Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26 Look! He is talking in public, and they say nothing against him! Can it be that they really know that he is the Messiah? But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
27 But when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from. And we all know where this man comes from.” Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
28 As Jesus taught in the Temple, he said in a loud voice, “Do you really know me and know where I am from? I have not come on my own authority. He who sent me, however, is truthful. You do not know him, Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
29 but I know him, because I come from him and he sent me.” But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
30 Then they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
31 But many in the crowd believed in him and said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more miracles than this man has?” And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
32
Guards Are Sent to Arrest Jesus
The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus, so they and the chief priests sent some guards to arrest him.
The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
33 Jesus said, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I shall go away to him who sent me. Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
34 You will look for me, but you will not find me, because you cannot go where I will be.” Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
35 The Jewish authorities said among themselves, “Where is he about to go so that we shall not find him? Will he go to the Greek cities where our people live, and teach the Greeks? Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
36 He says that we will look for him but will not find him, and that we cannot go where he will be. What does he mean?” What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
37
Streams of Life-Giving Water
On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Whoever is thirsty should come to me, and
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 whoever believes in me should drink. As the scripture says, ‘Streams of life-giving water will pour out from his side.’” He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
40
Division among the People
Some of the people in the crowd heard him say this and said, “This man is really the Prophet!”
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah!” But others said, “The Messiah will not come from Galilee! Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
42 The scripture says that the Messiah will be a descendant of King David and will be born in Bethlehem, the town where David lived.” Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 So there was a division in the crowd because of Jesus. So there was a division among the people because of him.
44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45
The Unbelief of the Jewish Authorities
When the guards went back, the chief priests and Pharisees asked them, “Why did you not bring him?”
Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
46 The guards answered, “Nobody has ever talked the way this man does!” The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
47 “Did he fool you, too?” the Pharisees asked them. Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
48 “Have you ever known one of the authorities or one Pharisee to believe in him? Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 This crowd does not know the Law of Moses, so they are under God's curse!” But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
50 One of the Pharisees there was Nicodemus, the man who had gone to see Jesus before. He said to the others, Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
51 “According to our Law we cannot condemn people before hearing them and finding out what they have done.” Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
52 “Well,” they answered, “are you also from Galilee? Study the Scriptures and you will learn that no prophet ever comes from Galilee.” They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53 — And every man went unto his own house.
