A Hymn in Time of National Trouble O Lord, I will always sing of your constant love; I will proclaim your faithfulness forever.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. |
I know that your love will last for all time, that your faithfulness is as permanent as the sky. | For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
You said, “I have made a covenant with the man I chose; I have promised my servant David, | I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
‘A descendant of yours will always be king; I will preserve your dynasty forever.’” | Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
The heavens sing of the wonderful things you do; the holy ones sing of your faithfulness, Lord. | And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
No one in heaven is like you, Lord; none of the heavenly beings is your equal. | For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord?
You are feared in the council of the holy ones; they all stand in awe of you. | God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
Lord God Almighty, none is as mighty as you; in all things you are faithful, O Lord. | O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?
You rule over the powerful sea; you calm its angry waves. | Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
You crushed the monster Rahab and killed it; with your mighty strength you defeated your enemies. | Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.
Heaven is yours, the earth also; you made the world and everything in it. | The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.
You created the north and the south; Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon sing to you for joy. | The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.
How powerful you are! How great is your strength! | Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.
Your kingdom is founded on righteousness and justice; love and faithfulness are shown in all you do. | Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
How happy are the people who worship you with songs, who live in the light of your kindness! | Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.
Because of you they rejoice all day long, and they praise you for your goodness. | In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.
You give us great victories; in your love you make us triumphant. | For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.
You, O Lord, chose our protector; you, the Holy God of Israel, gave us our king. | For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.
God's Promise to David In a vision long ago you said to your faithful servants, “I have given help to a famous soldier; I have given the throne to one I chose from the people.
Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. |
I have made my servant David king by anointing him with holy oil. | I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
My strength will always be with him, my power will make him strong. | With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
His enemies will never succeed against him; the wicked will not defeat him. | The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
I will crush his foes and kill everyone who hates him. | And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.
I will love him and be loyal to him; I will make him always victorious. | But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
I will extend his kingdom from the Mediterranean to the Euphrates River. | I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
He will say to me, ‘You are my father and my God; you are my protector and savior.’ | He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
I will make him my first-born son, the greatest of all kings. | Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
I will always keep my promise to him, and my covenant with him will last forever. | My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.
His dynasty will be as permanent as the sky; a descendant of his will always be king. | His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
“But if his descendants disobey my law and do not live according to my commands, | If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
if they disregard my instructions and do not keep my commandments, | If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
then I will punish them for their sins; I will make them suffer for their wrongs. | Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
But I will not stop loving David or fail to keep my promise to him. | Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
I will not break my covenant with him or take back even one promise I made him. | My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
“Once and for all I have promised by my holy name: I will never lie to David. | Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
He will always have descendants, and I will watch over his kingdom as long as the sun shines. | His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
It will be as permanent as the moon, that faithful witness in the sky.” | It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Lament over the Defeat of the King But you are angry with your chosen king; you have deserted and rejected him.
But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. |
You have broken your covenant with your servant and thrown his crown in the dirt. | Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
You have torn down the walls of his city and left his forts in ruins. | Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.
All who pass by steal his belongings; all his neighbors laugh at him. | All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.
You have given the victory to his enemies; you have made them all happy. | Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
You have made his weapons useless and let him be defeated in battle. | Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.
You have taken away his royal scepter and knocked his throne to the ground. | Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.
You have made him old before his time and covered him with disgrace. | The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
A Prayer for Deliverance Lord, will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire?
How long, Lord? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire? |
Remember how short my life is; remember that you created all of us mortal! | Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?
Who can live and never die? How can we humans keep ourselves from the grave? | What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
Lord, where are the former proofs of your love? Where are the promises you made to David? | Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
Don't forget how I, your servant, am insulted, how I endure all the curses of the heathen. | Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;
Your enemies insult your chosen king, O Lord! They insult him wherever he goes. | Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.
Praise the Lord forever! Amen! Amen! | Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.
