A Cry for Help
Lord God, my savior, I cry out all day, and at night I come before you.
O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:
Hear my prayer; listen to my cry for help! Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;
So many troubles have fallen on me that I am close to death. For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
I am like all others who are about to die; all my strength is gone. I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:
I am abandoned among the dead; I am like the slain lying in their graves, those you have forgotten completely, who are beyond your help. Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
You have thrown me into the depths of the tomb, into the darkest and deepest pit. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.
Your anger lies heavy on me, and I am crushed beneath its waves. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.
You have caused my friends to abandon me; you have made me repulsive to them. I am closed in and cannot escape; Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
my eyes are weak from suffering. Lord, every day I call to you and lift my hands to you in prayer. Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: Lord, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.
Do you perform miracles for the dead? Do they rise up and praise you? Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
Is your constant love spoken of in the grave or your faithfulness in the place of destruction? Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
Are your miracles seen in that place of darkness or your goodness in the land of the forgotten? Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
Lord, I call to you for help; every morning I pray to you. But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.
Why do you reject me, Lord? Why do you turn away from me? Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?
Ever since I was young, I have suffered and been near death; I am worn out from the burden of your punishments. I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
Your furious anger crushes me; your terrible attacks destroy me. Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.
All day long they surround me like a flood; they close in on me from every side. They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.
You have made even my closest friends abandon me, and darkness is my only companion. Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.
