The Prayer of an Elderly Person
Lord, I have come to you for protection; never let me be defeated!
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
Because you are righteous, help me and rescue me. Listen to me and save me! Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
Be my secure shelter and a strong fortress to protect me; you are my refuge and defense. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
My God, rescue me from wicked people, from the power of cruel and evil people. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
Sovereign Lord, I put my hope in you; I have trusted in you since I was young. For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.
I have relied on you all my life; you have protected me since the day I was born. I will always praise you. By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
My life has been an example to many, because you have been my strong defender. I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
All day long I praise you and proclaim your glory. Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
Do not reject me now that I am old; do not abandon me now that I am feeble. Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
My enemies want to kill me; they talk and plot against me. For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
They say, “God has abandoned him; let's go after him and catch him; there is no one to rescue him.” Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.
Don't stay so far away, O God; my God, hurry to my aid! O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.
May those who attack me be defeated and destroyed. May those who try to hurt me be shamed and disgraced. Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.
I will always put my hope in you; I will praise you more and more. But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
I will tell of your goodness; all day long I will speak of your salvation, though it is more than I can understand. My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.
I will go in the strength of the Lord God; I will proclaim your goodness, yours alone. I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
You have taught me ever since I was young, and I still tell of your wonderful acts. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
Now that I am old and my hair is gray, do not abandon me, O God! Be with me while I proclaim your power and might to all generations to come. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
Your righteousness, God, reaches the skies. You have done great things; there is no one like you. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
You have sent troubles and suffering on me, but you will restore my strength; you will keep me from the grave. Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
You will make me greater than ever; you will comfort me again. Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
I will indeed praise you with the harp; I will praise your faithfulness, my God. On my harp I will play hymns to you, the Holy One of Israel. I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
I will shout for joy as I play for you; with my whole being I will sing because you have saved me. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
I will speak of your righteousness all day long, because those who tried to harm me have been defeated and disgraced. My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.
