From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by order of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope— | Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
To Timothy, my true son in the faith: May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. | Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
Warnings against False Teaching I want you to stay in Ephesus, just as I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia. Some people there are teaching false doctrines, and you must order them to stop.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, |
Tell them to give up those legends and those long lists of ancestors, which only produce arguments; they do not serve God's plan, which is known by faith. | Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
The purpose of this order is to arouse the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a genuine faith. | Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
Some people have turned away from these and have lost their way in foolish discussions. | From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
They want to be teachers of God's law, but they do not understand their own words or the matters about which they speak with so much confidence. | Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
We know that the Law is good if it is used as it should be used. | But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
It must be remembered, of course, that laws are made, not for good people, but for lawbreakers and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, | Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
for the immoral, for sexual perverts, for kidnappers, for those who lie and give false testimony or who do anything else contrary to sound doctrine. | For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
That teaching is found in the gospel that was entrusted to me to announce, the Good News from the glorious and blessed God. | According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
Gratitude for God's Mercy I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength for my work. I thank him for considering me worthy and appointing me to serve him,
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; |
even though in the past I spoke evil of him and persecuted and insulted him. But God was merciful to me because I did not yet have faith and so did not know what I was doing. | Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
And our Lord poured out his abundant grace on me and gave me the faith and love which are ours in union with Christ Jesus. | And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I am the worst of them, | This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
but God was merciful to me in order that Christ Jesus might show his full patience in dealing with me, the worst of sinners, as an example for all those who would later believe in him and receive eternal life. | Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God—to him be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen. | Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Timothy, my child, I entrust to you this command, which is in accordance with the words of prophecy spoken in the past about you. Use those words as weapons in order to fight well, | This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
and keep your faith and a clear conscience. Some people have not listened to their conscience and have made a ruin of their faith. | Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have punished by handing them over to the power of Satan; this will teach them to stop their blasphemy. | Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
