The Birth of Jesus At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. |
When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. | (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown. | And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. | And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, | To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. | And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. | And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Shepherds and the Angels There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. |
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, | And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
but the angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. | And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
This very day in David's town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! | For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” | And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: | And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!” | Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.” | And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. | And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. | And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. | And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. | But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them. | And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
Jesus Is Named A week later, when the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived.
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. |
Jesus Is Presented in the Temple The time came for Joseph and Mary to perform the ceremony of purification, as the Law of Moses commanded. So they took the child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; |
as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male is to be dedicated to the Lord.” | (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
They also went to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons, as required by the law of the Lord. | And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him | And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. | And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, | And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God: | Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
“Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. | Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, | For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: | Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel.” | A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. | And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against | And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;
and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart.” | (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
— | And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
There was a very old prophet, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying. | And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
That very same hour she arrived and gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were waiting for God to set Jerusalem free. | And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth When Joseph and Mary had finished doing all that was required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee.
And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. |
The child grew and became strong; he was full of wisdom, and God's blessings were upon him. | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
The Boy Jesus in the Temple Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival.
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. |
When Jesus was twelve years old, they went to the festival as usual. | And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
When the festival was over, they started back home, but the boy Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. His parents did not know this; | And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
they thought that he was with the group, so they traveled a whole day and then started looking for him among their relatives and friends. | But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
They did not find him, so they went back to Jerusalem looking for him. | And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
On the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting with the Jewish teachers, listening to them and asking questions. | And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
All who heard him were amazed at his intelligent answers. | And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
His parents were astonished when they saw him, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been terribly worried trying to find you.” | And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
He answered them, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I had to be in my Father's house?” | And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?
But they did not understand his answer. | And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
So Jesus went back with them to Nazareth, where he was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. | And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
Jesus grew both in body and in wisdom, gaining favor with God and people. | And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
