Introduction Dear Theophilus: Many people have done their best to write a report of the things that have taken place among us.
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, |
They wrote what we have been told by those who saw these things from the beginning and who proclaimed the message. | Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
And so, Your Excellency, because I have carefully studied all these matters from their beginning, I thought it would be good to write an orderly account for you. | It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
I do this so that you will know the full truth about everything which you have been taught. | That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
The Birth of John the Baptist Is Announced During the time when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife's name was Elizabeth; she also belonged to a priestly family.
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. |
They both lived good lives in God's sight and obeyed fully all the Lord's laws and commands. | And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
They had no children because Elizabeth could not have any, and she and Zechariah were both very old. | And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
One day Zechariah was doing his work as a priest in the Temple, taking his turn in the daily service. | And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
According to the custom followed by the priests, he was chosen by lot to burn incense on the altar. So he went into the Temple of the Lord, | According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
while the crowd of people outside prayed during the hour when the incense was burned. | And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar where the incense was burned. | And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
When Zechariah saw him, he was alarmed and felt afraid. | And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
But the angel said to him, “Don't be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. | But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
How glad and happy you will be, and how happy many others will be when he is born! | And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
John will be great in the Lord's sight. He must not drink any wine or strong drink. From his very birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, | For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
and he will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. | And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
He will go ahead of the Lord, strong and mighty like the prophet Elijah. He will bring fathers and children together again; he will turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous; he will get the Lord's people ready for him.” | And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know if this is so? I am an old man, and my wife is old also.” | And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
“I am Gabriel,” the angel answered. “I stand in the presence of God, who sent me to speak to you and tell you this good news. | And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
But you have not believed my message, which will come true at the right time. Because you have not believed, you will be unable to speak; you will remain silent until the day my promise to you comes true.” | And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
In the meantime the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he was spending such a long time in the Temple. | And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
When he came out, he could not speak to them, and so they knew that he had seen a vision in the Temple. Unable to say a word, he made signs to them with his hands. | And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
When his period of service in the Temple was over, Zechariah went back home. | And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Some time later his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and did not leave the house for five months. | And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
“Now at last the Lord has helped me,” she said. “He has taken away my public disgrace!” | Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
The Birth of Jesus Is Announced In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth.
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, |
He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. | To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!” | And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. | And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
The angel said to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. | And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. | And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, | He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!” | And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin. How, then, can this be?” | Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God. | And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. | And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
For there is nothing that God cannot do.” | For with God nothing shall be impossible.
“I am the Lord's servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.” And the angel left her. | And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth Soon afterward Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea.
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; |
She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. | And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit | And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
and said in a loud voice, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear! | And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me? | And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. | For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
How happy you are to believe that the Lord's message to you will come true!” | And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Mary's Song of Praise Mary said, “My heart praises the Lord;
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, |
my soul is glad because of God my Savior, | And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, | For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; | For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. | And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. | He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. | He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. | He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. | He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever!” | As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth and then went back home. | And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
The Birth of John the Baptist The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son.
Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. |
Her neighbors and relatives heard how wonderfully good the Lord had been to her, and they all rejoiced with her. | And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
When the baby was a week old, they came to circumcise him, and they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. | And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
But his mother said, “No! His name is to be John.” | And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
They said to her, “But you don't have any relative with that name!” | And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Then they made signs to his father, asking him what name he would like the boy to have. | And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
Zechariah asked for a writing pad and wrote, “His name is John.” How surprised they all were! | And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
At that moment Zechariah was able to speak again, and he started praising God. | And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
The neighbors were all filled with fear, and the news about these things spread through all the hill country of Judea. | And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea.
Everyone who heard of it thought about it and asked, “What is this child going to be?” For it was plain that the Lord's power was upon him. | And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
Zechariah's Prophecy John's father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he spoke God's message:
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, |
“Let us praise the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to the help of his people and has set them free. | Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
He has provided for us a mighty Savior, a descendant of his servant David. | And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
He promised through his holy prophets long ago | As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
that he would save us from our enemies, from the power of all those who hate us. | That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
He said he would show mercy to our ancestors and remember his sacred covenant. | To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
— | The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
With a solemn oath to our ancestor Abraham he promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve him without fear, | That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
so that we might be holy and righteous before him all the days of our life. | In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
“You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, | And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
to tell his people that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven. | To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us | Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace.” | To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
The child grew and developed in body and spirit. He lived in the desert until the day when he appeared publicly to the people of Israel. | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
