| 1 | 約旦河 西，住山地、高原，並對著 黎巴嫩山 沿 大 海 一帶 的諸 王，就是赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人的諸王，聽見這事， | And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; |
| 2 | 就都聚集，同心合意地 要與 約書亞 和 以色列人 爭戰。 | That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. |
| 3 | 基遍 的居民 聽見 約書亞 向耶利哥 和艾城 所 行的事， | And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, |
| 4 | 就設 詭計， 假充使者，拿 舊 口袋 和破裂 縫補 的舊 皮酒 袋 馱在驢上， | They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; |
| 5 | 將補過的舊 鞋 穿 在腳上，把舊 衣服 穿在身上；他們所帶 的餅 都 是乾的，長了 霉了。 | And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. |
| 6 | 他們到 吉甲 營中 見 約書亞，對他 和 以色列 人 說：「我們是從遠 方 來的，現在 求你與我們 立 約。」 | And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. |
| 7 | 以色列 人 對 這些希未人 說：「只怕 你們是 住 在我們中間的；若是這樣，怎能 和你們 立 約呢？」 | And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? |
| 8 | 他們對 約書亞 說：「我們是 你的僕人。」約書亞 問他們 說：「你們是 甚麼人？是從哪裡 來的？」 | And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? |
| 9 | 他們回答說：「僕人 從極 遠 之地 而來，是因 聽見 耶和華─你 神 的名 聲和 他在埃及 所 行 的一切事， | And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, |
| 10 | 並 他向約旦河 東 的 兩 個亞摩利 王，就是希實本 王 西宏 和在亞斯他錄 的 巴珊 王 噩 一切 所 行的事。 | And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. |
| 11 | 我們的長老 和我們那地 的一切 居民 對我們 說：『你們手裡 要帶 著路上用的 食物 去 迎接以色列人，對他們 說：我們是 你們的僕人；現在 求你們與我們 立 約。』 | Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. |
| 12 | 我們出來 要往你們這裡 來 的日子，從家裡 帶出來 的 這 餅 還是熱的；看哪，現在 都乾了，長了 霉了。 | This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: |
| 13 | 這 皮酒 袋，我們盛 酒的時候 還是新的；看哪，現在已經破裂。我們這 衣服 和鞋，因為道路 甚 遠，也都穿舊了。」 | And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. |
| 14 | 以色列人 受了 他們些食物，並沒有 求問 耶和華。 | And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord. |
| 15 | 於是約書亞 與他們 講 和，與他們 立 約，容他們活著；會眾 的首領 也向他們 起誓。 | And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. |
| 16 | 以色列人與他們 立 約 之後， 過了 三 天 才聽見 他們是 近鄰， 住 在以色列人中間的。 | And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. |
| 17 | 以色列 人 起行，第三 天 到了 他們的城邑， 就是基遍、基非拉、比錄、基列‧耶琳。 | And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath–jearim. |
| 18 | 因為 會眾 的首領 已經指著耶和華─以色列的 神 向他們 起誓，所以以色列 人 不 擊殺他們；全 會眾 就向 首領 發怨言。 | And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. |
| 19 | 眾 首領 對 全 會眾 說：「我們 已經指著耶和華─以色列的 神 向他們 起誓，現在 我們不 能 害 他們。 | But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. |
| 20 | 我們要如此 待 他們，容他們 活著，免得 有 忿怒 因 我們所 起 的誓 臨到我們身上。」 | This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. |
| 21 | 首領 又對會眾 說：「要容他們活著。」於是他們為全 會眾 作了 劈 柴 挑 水的人，正如首領 對他們 所 說的話。 | And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. |
| 22 | 約書亞 召了 他們來， 對他們 說：「為甚麼 欺哄 我們 說『我們 離你們 甚 遠』呢？其實你們是 住 在我們中間。 | And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? |
| 23 | 現在 你們是 被咒詛的！你們中間的人 必斷 不了 作奴僕，為我 神 的殿 作劈 柴 挑 水的人。」 | Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. |
| 24 | 他們回答 約書亞 說：「因為 有人實在 告訴 你的僕人， 耶和華─你的 神 曾吩咐 他的僕人 摩西， 把 這全 地 賜 給你們，並在你們面前 滅絕 這地 的一切 居民，所以我們為你們的緣故 甚 怕 喪命，就行了 這 事。 | And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. |
| 25 | 現在 我們在你手中，你 以怎樣待 我們 為善 為正，就怎樣做吧！」 | And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. |
| 26 | 於是約書亞這樣 待 他們，救 他們 脫離以色列 人 的手，以色列人就沒有 殺他們。 | And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. |
| 27 | 當 日 約書亞 使他們 在 耶和華所 要選擇 的地方，為會眾 和耶和華 的壇 作劈 柴 挑 水的人，直到 今 日。 | And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose. |
