1 我子、爾若爲鄰作保、爲人拊掌、 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
2 則爲爾口所陷、爾言所執、 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 我子、旣入鄰之掌握、當行此以自救、速往懇求其人、 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
4 勿閉目而寢、勿合睫而眠、 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 尚其自救、如麞脫獵、如鳥脫捕、○ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 怠惰者歟、往視厥蟻、察其所爲、可得智慧、 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 彼雖無帥、無督無長、 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 夏時備食、穡時斂糧、 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 怠惰者歟、偃臥何其久、寢睡何時興、 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 再寢片時、又睡片時、叉手偃臥片時、 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 則爾貧窮之來如盜賊、匱乏之至如兵士、○ So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
12 言行乖謬、乃無賴之惡徒、 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 以目致意、以足傳情、以指指揮、 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 中心乖戾、恆謀邪惡、播厥爭端、 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 故其災害突至、勿遭摧折、無術補救、 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
16 耶和華所惡者有六、所憎者有七、 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 卽目傲舌謊、手流無辜之血、 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 心圖惡謀、足趨邪慝、 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 發誑言而妄證、於昆弟播爭端、○ A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 我子、當守父命、勿棄母教、 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 恆結之於心、繫之於項、 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 行時則導爾、臥時則衞爾、寤時則語爾、 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 蓋其誡爲燈、其教爲光、訓誨之譴責、爲生命之路、 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 保爾脫於惡婦、免於外婦諂媚之舌、 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 爾心勿戀其美色、勿爲其眉睫所誘、 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 人因妓女之故、僅餘片餅、淫婦獵取寶貴之命、 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
27 懷抱炎火、衣豈不焚、 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 經行爇炭、足豈不灼、 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 暱鄰妻者亦如是、凡捫之者、不爲無罪、 So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 盜若因餓、竊物充飢、人不之鄙、 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 倘其被獲、必償七倍、罄厥家貲、 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 淫人妻者、乃乏知識、凡行此者、必喪己命、 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 受傷受辱、其恥莫能拭、 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 蓋人因嫉生怒、報復之日、必不寬宥、 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 不顧贖金、雖多饋之、猶不滿意、 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
