1 提幔人以利法曰、 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 智者豈可以虛識爲對、以東風充懷乎、 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 豈可以無益之言、無效之語而辯乎、 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 爾乃廢人寅畏、阻人虔誠、於上帝前、 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 爾惡訓爾之口、爾擇譎者之舌、 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 罪爾者、非我也、乃爾口也、爾脣證爾之非、 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 爾爲首生之人乎、爾之受造、先於山乎、 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 上帝祕旨、爾得聞乎、智慧爾獨擅乎、 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 爾何所知、我儕不知耶、爾何所明、我儕不明耶、 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 我中有皓首者、有高壽者、較爾父尤長、 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 上帝之慰藉、語爾之婉言、爾視爲瑣屑乎、 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 爾心曷迫爾、爾目曷發赤、 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 致爾專心逆上帝、任口出言詞、 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 世人維何、能爲潔乎、婦所生者維何、得稱義乎、 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 夫上帝不恃其聖者、在其目中、穹蒼猶爲不潔、 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 況汚穢可憎、飲惡如水之人乎、 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 我將示爾、爾其聽之、我所見者、我必述之、 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 卽哲人受於列祖、而不隱者也、 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 斯地獨賜於彼、且無外人經歷其間、 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 其言曰、惡人終身勞苦、一生之日、卽爲強暴所積之年、 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 驚駭之聲、常聞於耳、亨通之時、殘賊臨之、 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 彼不信己可自幽暗而返、乃爲鋒刃所待、 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 流離求食、曰食何在、自知幽暗之日伊邇、 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 災難悽慘、使之恐懼、其勝之也、有若備戰之王、 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 因其舉手以攻上帝、狂傲以敵全能者、 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 彼強厥項、以厚盾衝突之、 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 其面豐腴、其腰肥大、 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 居於荒涼之邑、無人居處、將爲邱墟之第、 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 不得富有、其業不恆、其物產不增盛於地、 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 彼不得出幽暗、火灼其枝、必亡於上帝之噓氣、 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 彼勿恃虛僞以自欺、蓋虛僞必爲其報、 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 未及時而已成、其枝不得復青、 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 如葡萄果、未稔而先落、如橄欖花、旣開而卽謝、 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 不虔之輩、必無果實、貪賄之幕、必被焚燬、 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 彼惟孕慝生惡、心具詭譎、 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
