1 厥後、耶穌遊行加利利、不欲行於猶太、以猶太人欲殺之、 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 猶太人之構廬節伊邇、 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
3 其兄弟謂之曰、去此、往猶太、俾爾徒亦見爾所行、 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
4 未有欲自顯、而行於隱者也、爾若行此、宜自顯於世矣、 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
5 蓋其兄弟亦未之信也、 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
6 耶穌曰、我時尚未至、爾時恆便、 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7 世不能惡爾而惡我、以我證其惡行也、 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
8 爾何赴節、我猶不赴焉、以我時未至也、 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
9 言此、則仍居加利利、○ When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10 迨其兄弟赴節、耶穌亦往、非顯然、乃若隱然者、 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
11 猶太人於節期尋之曰、彼安在乎、 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 衆多竊議之、或曰善人也、或曰否、乃惑衆耳、 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
13 然無明言之者、懼猶太人故也、○ Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 節期中、耶穌上殿訓誨、 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 猶太人奇之曰、斯人未學、何由識書乎、 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 耶穌曰、我之訓非由己、乃由遣我者也、 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 人苟願行其旨、必知斯訓、或由上帝、或我由己而言矣、 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 由己言者、求己之榮、惟求遣之者之榮、斯人乃誠、其衷無不義也、 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 摩西非以律授爾乎、第爾中無一行律者、何爲欲殺我耶、 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20 衆曰、爾患鬼矣、誰欲殺爾、 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 耶穌曰、我曾行一事、爾皆奇之、 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 夫摩西授爾割禮、然非由摩西、乃由列祖、故安息日、爾行割於人、 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 人於安息日受割、免違摩西之律、而我於安息日使人痊愈、爾遂怒我乎、 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24 勿鞫以貌、惟鞫以義、○ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 耶路撒冷人有云、此非衆所欲殺者乎、 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26 今彼侃侃而談、無與之言者、有司誠知其爲基督乎、 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
27 然我儕知斯人所自、而基督至、無知其所自者、 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
28 故耶穌於殿訓誨、呼曰、爾知我、亦知我所自、我非擅至、遣我者乃眞、爾不知之、 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
29 惟我知之、以我由之而來、而彼遣我也、 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
30 衆遂欲執之、但無著手者、以其時未至也、 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
31 衆中多信之、曰、基督至、其行異蹟、多於斯人乎、 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
32 法利賽人聞衆議如此、遂與祭司諸長遣役執之、 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
33 耶穌曰、我猶暫偕爾、後歸遣我者、 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
34 爾將尋我不遇、我所在、爾弗能至、 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
35 猶太人相語曰、彼將何往、使我不遇耶、豈往散處於希利尼人中者、而訓希利尼人乎、 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
36 其言尋我不遇、我所在、爾弗能至、是何言歟、○ What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
37 於節之末日、卽大日也、耶穌立而呼曰、人若渴、宜就我飲、 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 信我者、如經所言、將有活水之川、由其腹而流焉、 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 耶穌此言、指信之者將受之聖神、蓋聖神尚未降、因耶穌未榮也、 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
40 衆聞斯言、或曰、是誠彼先知也、 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
41 或曰、是乃基督、或曰、基督豈出自加利利乎、 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
42 經不云、基督出於大衞之裔、自伯利恆、卽大衞所居之鄉乎、 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 衆遂因之紛爭、 So there was a division among the people because of him.
44 中有欲執之者、但無人著手耳、○ And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45 役復祭司諸長、及法利賽人、僉曰、何不曳之來乎、 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
46 對曰、從未有人若是而言也、 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
47 法利賽人曰、爾亦爲所惑乎、 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
48 有司與法利賽人、有信之者乎、 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 但此衆不識律、見詛矣、 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
50 中有尼哥底母、卽昔詣耶穌者、謂之曰、 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
51 未聽其言、不識其所爲、而鞫之、豈我律乎、 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
52 衆曰、爾亦出自加利利乎、可考而知、無先知自加利利起也、○ They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53 衆乃歸、 And every man went unto his own house.
