1 有法利賽人尼哥底母者、猶太宰也、 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 夜詣耶穌曰、夫子、我儕知爾爲師、自上帝而來、蓋爾所行之異蹟、非上帝與偕、無能行者、 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 耶穌曰、我誠語汝、人非更生、不能見上帝國也、 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 尼哥底母曰、人旣老、奚能生、能再入母胎而生耶、 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 耶穌曰、我誠語汝、人非由水與聖神而生、不能入上帝國、 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 由肉而生者、肉也、由神而生者、神也、 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 我語爾必更生、勿以爲奇、 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 夫風任意而吹、爾聞其聲、不知其何來何往、凡由聖神生者、亦若是、 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 尼哥底母曰、安有此乎、 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 耶穌曰、爾爲以色列之師、猶未知此乎、 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 我誠語汝、我儕言所知、證所見、而爾曹不受我證焉、 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 我言屬地者、爾尚弗信、若言屬天者、爾詎信乎、 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 從未有升天者、惟自天而降、卽在天之人子耳、 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 摩西舉蛇於野、人子亦必如是見舉、 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 致凡信之者、於彼而有永生、○ That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 蓋上帝愛世、至賜其獨生子、俾凡信之者、免淪亡而有永生、 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 因上帝遣子入世、非以鞫世、乃令由之獲救、 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 信之者不受鞫、不信者已鞫矣、以其未信上帝獨生子之名也、 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 是鞫也、因光臨世、而人愛暗愈於光、以其行惡也、 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 蓋凡爲惡者、惡光、而不就之、恐其所行見責、 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 惟行眞理者就光、以彰其行乃遵上帝而行焉、○ But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 厥後、耶穌與其徒至猶太地、居而施洗、 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 約翰亦施洗於近撒冷之哀嫩、以其地多水也、衆至而受洗焉、 And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24 蓋約翰尚未下獄也、 For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 其徒與一猶太人辯潔禮、 Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26 遂詣約翰曰、夫子、昔偕爾於約但外、爾所證者、今施洗、而人皆就之、 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 約翰曰、非由天授、人則無所能受、 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
28 爾曹證之、我曾言我非基督、乃奉遣於其前耳、 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 娶新婦者、新郎也、新郎之友立而聽之、聞其聲則喜甚、故我此喜滿盈矣、 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 彼必興、我必衰、 He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 自上來者在萬有上、自地者屬地、所言者亦屬地、自天來者在萬有上、 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 其所證者、乃其所見所聞、而無人受其證、 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 受其證者、如已鈐印、證上帝爲眞矣、 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 上帝所遣者、言上帝之言、蓋上帝賜聖神無限量也、 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 父愛子、以萬有付其手、 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36 信子者有永生、不順子者弗得生、上帝之怒止其上矣、 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
