1 元始有道、道偕上帝、道卽上帝也、 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 是道元始與上帝偕也、 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 萬有由之而造、凡受造者、無不由之而造焉、 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 生在其中、生者人之光也、 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 光燭於暗、而暗弗識之、 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 有上帝所遣者、名曰約翰、 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 彼來作證、卽爲光作證、俾衆由之而信、 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 斯人非光、特爲光作證耳、 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 是乃眞光、普照凡入世之人、 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 其在世也、世由之而造、而世弗識之、 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 其至己所屬、而屬己者弗受也、 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 凡受之者、卽信其名者、則賜之權、爲上帝子、 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 其生也、非由血氣、非由情欲、非由人意、乃由上帝也、 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 夫道成人身、寓我儕中、充乎恩寵眞理、我儕見其榮、如天父獨生子之榮焉、 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15 約翰爲之證、呼曰、我言後我來者、乃爲我先、以其先我而在、卽斯人也、 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16 由其所充者、我儕皆有所受、卽恩之有加無已矣、 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17 夫律由摩西而授、恩寵眞理、則由耶穌基督而來、 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 從未有見上帝者、惟在父懷之獨生子表彰之、○ No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19 約翰之證如左、猶太人自耶路撒冷遣祭司及利未人、問之曰、爾誰也、 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20 約翰承而不諱、曰、我非基督、 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21 曰、然則爾爲以利亞乎、曰、非也、爾爲彼先知乎、曰、否、 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
22 曰、爾爲誰、俾我可復遣我者、爾自謂何如也、 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23 曰、我乃呼於野者之聲云、直主之路、如先知以賽亞所言也、 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
24 其人乃法利賽人所遣、 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
25 復問之曰、爾非基督、非以利亞、非彼先知、胡爲施洗耶、 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
26 約翰曰、我以水施洗耳、有立於爾中、爾弗識者、 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27 卽後我而來、我解其履帶、亦弗堪焉、 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28 斯事行於約但外、伯大尼地、卽約翰施洗處也、○ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 翌日、約翰見耶穌來、則曰、觀上帝之羔、乃負世之罪者、 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 此卽我所言、後我來者乃爲我先、以其先我而在也、 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 我素弗識之、但爲使之顯於以色列、故來以水施洗耳、 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 約翰又證之曰、我曾見聖神如鴿、自天而降、止於其上、 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 我素弗識之、惟遣我以水施洗者、語我曰、爾見聖神降而止其上者、卽以聖神施洗者也、 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 我見之、而證其爲上帝子也、○ And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35 又翌日、約翰偕二徒立、 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 見耶穌遊行、則曰、觀上帝之羔、 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 二徒聞其言、遂從耶穌、 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 耶穌回顧、見其從己、曰、爾何求、對曰、拉比何居、拉比、譯卽夫子也、 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39 曰、來則見之、遂往觀焉、是日與之同居、時約申正矣、 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
40 聞約翰言、而從耶穌者、其一乃西門彼得之弟安得烈、 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41 彼先遇其兄西門曰、我儕已遇彌賽亞、譯卽基督、 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42 遂引之就耶穌、耶穌顧之曰、爾乃約翰子西門、將稱磯法、譯卽彼得、 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
43 翌日、耶穌欲往加利利、遇腓力、謂之曰、從我、 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
44 腓力者、伯賽大人也、與安得烈彼得同邑、 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 腓力遇拿但業曰、摩西律及先知所載者、我儕已遇之、卽約瑟之子、拿撒勒人耶穌也、 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46 拿但業曰、善者能出自拿撒勒乎、腓力曰、來觀之、 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
47 耶穌見拿但業至、指之曰、是誠以色列人、無詭譎者、 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
48 拿但業曰、何由知我乎、曰、腓力未呼爾、爾在無花果樹下、我已見之矣、 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
49 拿但業曰、夫子、爾乃上帝子、以色列王也、 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
50 耶穌曰、因我言於無花果樹下見爾、爾卽信乎、爾將見尤大於此者、 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 又曰、我誠語汝、爾將見天開、上帝之使陟降於人子上矣、 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
