1 有病者拉撒路、居伯大尼、卽馬利亞與其姊妹馬大之村、 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 此馬利亞、乃昔以膏膏主、以髮拭其足者、病者拉撒路、其兄弟也、 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 姊妹遣人告耶穌曰、主、爾所愛者病矣、 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 耶穌聞之曰、此病不至死、乃爲上帝之榮、俾上帝子以是而榮也、 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 馬大姊妹、並拉撒路、皆耶穌所愛者、 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 旣聞其病、於所居之處仍留二日、 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 後謂門徒曰、我儕可復往猶太、 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.
8 門徒曰、夫子、猶太人方欲以石擊爾、爾尚復往乎、 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 耶穌曰、晝非六時乎、人晝行不蹶、因見此世之光、 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 夜行則蹶、以其無光也、 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 言竟、又曰、我儕之友拉撒路寢矣、我往寤之、 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 門徒曰、主、寢則將愈矣、 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 耶穌此言、乃指其死、門徒意其謂安寢也、 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 耶穌遂明告之曰、拉撒路死矣、 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 我未在彼、則爲爾喜、致爾信也、雖然、我儕往就之、 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 多馬稱低土馬者、謂同人曰、我儕亦往、與之偕亡、○ Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 耶穌至、知拉撒路葬已四日矣、 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 伯大尼近耶路撒冷、相去約六里、 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 猶太人多就馬大馬利亞、爲其兄弟而唁之、 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 馬大聞耶穌至、出迓之、馬利亞仍坐於室、 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 馬大謂耶穌曰、主若在此、我兄弟不死矣、 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 今我知爾凡求於上帝者、莫不賜爾、 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 耶穌曰、爾兄弟將復起、 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 馬大曰、我知末日復起時、彼亦復起、 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 耶穌曰、復起者我也、生者亦我、信我者、雖死必生、 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 生而信我者、永不死、爾信斯乎、 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 馬大曰、主、然也、我已信爾爲基督、卽上帝子、當入世者、 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 言竟、乃歸、潛呼其姊妹馬利亞曰、師至、呼爾、 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 馬利亞聞之、亟起就之、 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 時、耶穌未入村、猶在馬大迓之之所、 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 偕馬利亞在室、而唁之之猶太人、見其亟起而出、則從之、意其往墓而哭也、 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 馬利亞至、見耶穌、伏其足下、曰、主若在此、我兄弟不死矣、 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 耶穌見其哭、又見偕來之猶太人亦哭、心恚而傷、 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34 曰、葬於何處、曰、主來觀之、 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 耶穌泣焉、 Jesus wept.
36 猶太人曰、其愛斯人何如也、 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 或曰、彼曾啟瞽者之目、不能使斯人不死乎、 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 耶穌復恚於衷、至墓、墓乃洞、上置石焉、 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 耶穌曰、去其石、死者之姊妹馬大曰、主、今已臭矣、蓋四日也、 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 耶穌曰、我不語汝云、爾若信、將見上帝之榮乎、 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 衆遂去石、耶穌仰目曰、父歟、爾旣聽我、我謝爾、 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 我知爾恆聽我、但我言此、乃爲環立之衆、俾其信爾遣我也、 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 言畢、大聲呼曰、拉撒路出、 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 死者卽出、手足束布、面裹巾、耶穌謂衆曰、解之使行、○ And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 就馬利亞之猶太人、見耶穌所行、多信之、 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 但有以其所行、往告法利賽人者、○ But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 於是祭司諸長與法利賽人集會曰、斯人多行異蹟、我儕若何、 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 若容其如是、衆將信之、羅馬人必至、奪我土地人民矣、 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 中有該亞法者、是年爲大祭司、語衆曰、爾無所知也、 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 獨不思一人爲衆死、俾舉國弗亡、乃爾曹之益也、 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 其言非由乎己、乃是年適爲大祭司、豫言耶穌將爲斯民死也、 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 且不祇爲斯民、又使上帝散處之子民、會歸於一也、 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 自是而後、衆議殺之、○ Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 故耶穌不復顯行於猶太人中、去彼而往近野之地、至一邑、名以法蓮、偕門徒居之、 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 猶太人逾越節伊邇、多有自鄉上耶路撒冷者、於節前自潔也、 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 衆尋耶穌、立於殿相語曰、爾意若何、彼不赴節乎、 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 祭司諸長與法利賽人、曾出諭曰、若有知其所在者、宜報焉、俾得執之、 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
