1 羅波安往示劍、因以色列衆至彼、欲立之爲王、 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2 昔尼八子耶羅波安、避所羅門王、遁於埃及居焉、今聞此事、 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3 民衆遣人招之、遂與以色列會衆、來見羅波安曰、 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 爾父使我儕負軛艱苦、爾其輕爾父之重軛、與艱苦之役事、我則服事爾、 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5 王曰、姑退、越三日、復來見我、民乃去、 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6 其父所羅門存日、有侍其前之耆老、羅波安王與之議曰、汝有何謀、以答斯民、 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7 僉曰、今日爾若願爲斯民之僕、而服事之、答以善言、彼必永爲爾僕、 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8 惟王違棄耆老之謀、與侍其前、偕己同長之少者謀、 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 曰、斯民謂我云、爾父加我之軛、求爾輕之、汝有何謀、以答斯民、 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10 偕彼同長之少者曰、斯民謂爾云、爾父使我負重軛、求爲我輕之、可答之曰、我之小指、巨於我父之腰、 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11 我父使爾負重軛、我必益之、我父責爾以鞭、我則責爾以蠍、 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 越三日、耶羅波安與民衆、咸詣羅波安、循王所命、越三日復來見我之言、 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13 王以厲詞答之、違棄耆老之謀、 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
14 依少者之謀、告之曰、我父使爾負重軛、我必益之、我父責爾以鞭、我則責爾以蠍、 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 王不聽民所求、是事由於耶和華、以應耶和華藉示羅人亞希雅、告尼八子耶羅波安之言、 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 以色列衆見王不聽、則謂王曰、我與大衞何與、我於耶西子無業、以色列人歟、爾其歸幕、大衞家歟、爾其自顧、以色列人遂歸其幕、 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17 惟居猶大諸邑之以色列人、羅波安爲其王、 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 羅波安王遣司力役之亞多蘭至以色列人、以色列人以石擊斃之、羅波安王亟登車、遁於耶路撒冷、 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 於是以色列人叛大衞家、至於今日、 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
20 以色列衆聞耶羅波安歸、則遣人招之詣會衆、立爲以色列衆之王、猶大支派而外、無有從大衞家者、○ And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21 羅波安至耶路撒冷、集猶大全家、及便雅憫支派、所簡戰士、十有八萬、欲與以色列家戰、俾國復歸所羅門子羅波安、 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22 上帝諭上帝僕示瑪雅曰、 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23 告猶大王、所羅門子羅波安、與猶大便雅憫全家、及餘民曰、 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24 耶和華云、勿往與兄弟以色列人戰、其各歸家、蓋是事由於我也、衆從耶和華言、遵命而歸、○ Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.
25 耶羅波安在以法蓮山地、建示劍而居之、自此而出、建毘努伊勒、 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26 意謂此國將歸大衞家、 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27 倘斯民往耶路撒冷、獻祭於耶和華室、其心必歸厥主猶大王羅波安、則殺我而歸彼、 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28 王旣籌思、乃作金犢二、告民曰、爾曹上耶路撒冷甚難、以色列人歟、導爾出埃及之神卽此、 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 遂置一犢於伯特利、一犢於但、 And he set the one in Beth–el, and the other put he in Dan.
30 此事陷人於罪、因民往但、崇拜其一、 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31 王於崇邱建廟、由衆民中、不屬利未族者、簡立祭司、 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32 又設節期於八月之望、若猶大之節期、而登其壇、在伯特利亦如是、獻祭於所作之犢、以所立爲邱壇之祭司、置於伯特利、 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth–el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth–el the priests of the high places which he had made.
33 八月之望、卽以己意所定之期、詣伯特利所作之壇、爲以色列族設筵、登壇焚香、 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth–el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
