1 耶和華留此諸族、是欲試以色列人未知迦南戰事者、 Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2 使以色列後代知習前所未悉之武事、所留諸族如左、 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3 非利士之五伯、迦南人、西頓人、居利巴嫩山之希未人、自巴力黑們山、至哈馬道、 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal–hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4 所以留此、爲試以色列人遵耶和華藉摩西諭其祖之誡否、 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 於是以色列人居迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人之中、 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6 取其女爲妻、以女嫁其子、崇事其神、○ And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7 以色列人行耶和華所惡、忘其上帝耶和華、而崇事諸巴力、曁木偶、 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
8 故耶和華怒以色列人、付之米所波大米王古珊利薩田手、事之八年、 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan–rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan–rishathaim eight years.
9 以色列人籲耶和華、耶和華爲之興起救者、卽迦勒弟基納斯子俄陀聶以拯之、 And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 耶和華之神臨之、爲以色列士師出戰、耶和華以米所波大米王古珊利薩田付於其手、使之獲勝、 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushan–rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan–rishathaim.
11 其地綏安、歷四十年、基納斯子俄陀聶卒、○ And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 以色列人又行耶和華所惡、耶和華因此、使摩押王伊磯倫強盛、以攻以色列、 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
13 遂集亞捫亞瑪力二族、往攻以色列、據椶樹城、 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
14 以色列人事摩押王伊磯倫、十有八年、 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15 以色列人籲耶和華、耶和華爲之興起救者、卽便雅憫人基拉之子以笏、其人左手較捷、以色列人藉之進貢摩押王伊磯倫、 But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16 以笏鑄兩刃之劍、長一肘、繫右股衣內、 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
17 進貢摩押王伊磯倫、其王肥甚、 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
18 進貢已畢、遣舁者去、 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19 以笏至吉甲偶像處而返、告曰、王歟、我有密事奏爾、王曰、肅靜、侍者咸出、 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20 王在樓上、獨坐涼室、以笏詣之曰、我奉上帝命、有言告爾、王遂起、 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21 以笏伸其左手、拔劍於右股際、以刺王腹、 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
22 劍柄亦入、其刃爲脂所蔽、不拔之出、乃洞穿之、 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
23 以笏出至廊廡、扃鍵樓門、 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
24 旣出、王僕至、見樓門上鍵、曰、王必在內室更衣、 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
25 俟久而門不啟、則惶愧、取鑰啟之、見主已死、偃仆於地、 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
26 遲疑之際、以笏已遁、過偶像處、逃於西伊拉、 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
27 至則吹角於以法蓮山地、以色列人隨之而下、以笏導之、 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
28 曰、爾其從我、耶和華以爾敵摩押人付於爾手、衆遂從之、據約但津、不容摩押一人濟、 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the Lord hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29 殺摩押人以萬計、皆壯勇之士、無一逃者、 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
30 當時摩押服於以色列人、其地綏安、歷八十年、 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
31 厥後、有亞拿子珊迦、以牛杖殺非利士人六百、亦拯以色列人、 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
