1 以色列人曾在米斯巴誓曰、我儕皆不以女妻便雅憫人、 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
2 民至伯特利、坐於上帝前、迨及薄暮、舉聲痛哭、曰、 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;
3 以色列之上帝耶和華歟、今日以色列中缺一支派、何爲有此事乎、 And said, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
4 翌日、民衆夙興、築壇、獻燔祭及酬恩祭、 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
5 以色列人曾重誓曰、凡不上米斯巴、詣耶和華者、必致之死、故相問曰、以色列支派中、孰不與會、詣耶和華、 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the Lord? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 以色列人爲其昆弟便雅憫人而悔、曰、以色列支派中、今日絕其一矣、 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
7 我旣指耶和華而誓、不以我女妻之、則其遺民若何得妻、 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8 又曰、以色列支派中、孰不上米斯巴、詣耶和華乎、察知基列雅比無人入營與會、 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the Lord? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh–gilead to the assembly.
9 蓋核民時、見其居民無一在者、 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead there.
10 會衆遣其最勇之士一萬二千、命之曰、往哉、刃擊基列雅比居民、曁厥婦孺、 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11 所有丁男、及已適人之女、悉殲滅之、 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
12 於其居民中、遇處子四百、未適人者、攜至迦南地示羅營、 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 會衆遣使至臨門磐、以和告便雅憫人、 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.
14 便雅憫人遂歸、則以基列雅比生存之女妻之、尚爲不足、 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh–gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
15 民爲便雅憫人而悔、蓋耶和華使以色列支派有闕如也、 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 會之長老曰、便雅憫之婦女旣滅、則其遺民何以妻之、 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
17 又曰、便雅憫人之逃脫者、必有其業、免以色列支派泯沒其一、 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
18 但我儕不可妻之以女、因以色列人曾誓曰、以女妻便雅憫人者、必受詛也、 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19 遂曰、在利波拿南、伯特利北、往示劍道東之示羅、歲有耶和華節期、 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth–el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth–el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
20 乃命便雅憫人曰、爾往伏於葡萄園、 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 見示羅女出而舞蹈、則由葡萄園出、各執其女爲妻、而歸便雅憫地、 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 如其父兄赴愬於我、我則曰、請爾施恩、以之予我、蓋昔戰時、我不留女以爲其妻、今亦非爾所妻、若然、則爲有罪、 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
23 便雅憫人如言而行、循其人數、執舞蹈之女爲妻、歸其故業、復建諸邑以居、 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 於是以色列人歸其支派室家、自彼各復本業、 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
25 是時以色列無王、人各任意而行、 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
