1 當士師主治時、斯土薦饑、有猶大伯利恆人、與妻及二子、往旅於摩押地、 Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth–lehem–judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
2 其人名以利米勒、妻名拿俄米、二子名瑪倫、基連、俱爲猶大伯利恆之以法他人、至摩押地居焉、 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth–lehem–judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
3 拿俄米夫以利米勒死、遺其妻及二子、 And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
4 二子娶摩押女、一名俄珥巴、一名路得、居彼約十年、 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
5 瑪倫基連俱亡、遺拿俄米、無夫、亦無子、 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
6 在摩押地、聞耶和華垂顧其民、賜之以糧、則起、攜其二媳、欲自摩押地歸、 Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.
7 婦離所居、偕其二媳、循途以返猶大、 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
8 拿俄米謂二媳曰、各歸母家、願耶和華恩待爾、如爾之待死者及我然、 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
9 願耶和華賜爾各得綏安於夫家、遂吻之、二媳發聲而哭、 The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
10 曰、否、我必與爾偕歸爾國、 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
11 拿俄米曰、吾女歟、其歸哉、曷欲與我偕往、我猶孕子爲爾夫乎、 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 我女歟、其歸哉、我年已邁、不復有夫、如曰我尚有望、是夜得夫、且能誕子、 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
13 爾豈欲待其長、而不嫁他人乎、我女歟、勿若是、我緣爾故、更爲愁苦、蓋耶和華之手擊我、 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.
14 二媳復發聲而哭、俄珥巴吻其姑而別、惟路得依附之、 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
15 拿俄米曰、爾之妯娌、已歸其國其神、汝其從之而歸、 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
16 路得曰、勿勸我離爾、不汝從、汝之所往、我必俱往、汝之所寓、我必偕寓、汝民必爲我民、汝上帝必爲我上帝、 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
17 汝所死之處、我亦死於彼、葬於彼、除死而外、我若與爾相離、願耶和華罰我維倍、 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
18 拿俄米見路得決志偕往、則不復言、 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
19 二人乃往伯利恆、旣至、舉邑聳動、婦女咸曰、此乃拿俄米乎、 So they two went until they came to Beth–lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth–lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
20 曰、勿稱我拿俄米、當稱我爲瑪拉、蓋全能者待我苦甚、 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
21 我富有而出、耶和華使我匱乏而歸、耶和華旣責我、全能者旣苦我、奚稱我爲拿俄米哉、 I went out full, and the Lord hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
22 拿俄米與其媳摩押女路得、歸自摩押乃若此、彼至伯利恆時、適穫麰麥之際、 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth–lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
