1 基列人耶弗他、大勇士也、乃基列之子、妓之所生、 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
2 基列妻亦生子、旣長、逐耶弗他、曰、爾乃外婦子、不可嗣業於我父家、 And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
3 耶弗他避兄弟、居陀伯地、游蕩之徒歸而從之、○ Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
4 逾時、亞捫人與以色列戰、 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 基列長老往陀伯地、招耶弗他、 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
6 曰、爾來爲我軍長、與亞捫人戰、 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
7 耶弗他曰、爾非憾我、逐我於父家乎、今爾遭難、何就我耶、 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
8 基列長老曰、我今就爾、請爾偕行、與亞捫人戰、爲我基列民長、 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
9 耶弗他曰、爾若導我歸、與亞捫人戰、而耶和華付之於我手、我則爲爾長乎、 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Lord deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10 曰、爾我間耶和華爲證、我必依爾言而行、 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lord be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
11 耶弗他與基列長老偕行、民遂立之爲長爲帥、耶弗他在米斯巴、陳述其辭於耶和華前、○ Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.
12 耶弗他遣使見亞捫王曰、爾與我何與、致爾至我、而攻我地乎、 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13 亞捫王謂使者曰、以色列人出埃及時、奪我土地、自亞嫩至雅博、迄於約但、今可安然反我斯土、 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14 耶弗他又遣使見亞捫王曰、 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:
15 耶弗他云、摩押及亞捫人之地、以色列人未嘗奪之、 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16 以色列人出埃及、過荒野、至紅海、及加低斯、 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 遣使告以東王曰、請容我過爾境、以東王不允、遣使見摩押王、亦不允、以色列人遂居加低斯、 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18 旣經曠野、遶以東摩押之境、由摩押東而來、建營於亞嫩外、亞嫩爲摩押界、不入其境、 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.
19 以色列人遣使見都希實本之亞摩利王西宏、告之曰、請容我過爾境、以適我土、 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
20 西宏不信以色列人、不令過其境、乃集民衆、建營於雅雜、與以色列戰、 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 以色列之上帝耶和華、以西宏及其民衆、付於以色列人手、以色列人擊之、取亞摩利人所居之地、 And the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 得亞摩利境、自亞嫩至雅博、自曠野至約但、 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
23 以色列之上帝耶和華、旣逐亞摩利人於其民前、則爾豈可得其地乎、 So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
24 爾神基抹賜爾之地、爾豈不取之乎、我之上帝耶和華逐人於我前、其地我亦取之、 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the Lord our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25 爾豈愈於摩押王西撥子巴勒乎、彼豈嘗攻以色列人、而與之戰乎、 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26 以色列人居希實本、亞羅珥、與其鄉里、曁沿亞嫩諸邑、歷三百年、當時爾何不取之、 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
27 我未嘗獲罪於爾、爾乃攻我、以惡相待、願鞫人之耶和華、今日在以色列人亞捫人間、判其是非、 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28 亞捫王不聽耶弗他使所言、○ Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 耶和華之神臨耶弗他、遂巡基列瑪拿西地、至基列之米斯巴、自此而往、至亞捫族、 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 耶弗他許願於耶和華曰、如爾果以亞捫人付於我手、 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31 則我自亞捫族安然而歸時、出我門而迓者、必歸於耶和華、我必獻之爲燔祭、 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32 耶弗他抵亞捫族、與之戰、耶和華付之於其手、 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands.
33 遂擊之、自亞羅珥至米匿、及亞備勒基拉明、取邑二十、大行殺戮、於是亞捫族服於以色列人、○ And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 耶弗他止有一女、別無子女、返米斯巴、至己家、其女執鼗、舞蹈出迎、 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 耶弗他見之、則裂衣曰、嗚呼吾女、使我憯怛、加我苦難、我向耶和華啟口、不能食言、 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
36 女曰、我父歟、爾旣向耶和華啟口、請踐其言、以行於我、蓋耶和華爲爾、復仇於爾敵亞捫族、 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37 又謂父曰、求父允我一事、假我二月、俾我得與女伴登山、哀我以處子終、 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
38 曰、往哉、乃遣之、期以二月、遂與女伴偕往、在山哀其以處子終、 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39 二月旣盈、女歸父所、父循所許之願、以待其女、乃不字而終、 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 厥後以色列女立爲常例、每年爲基列人、耶弗他女哀悼四日、 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
