| 1 | 耶和華匱在非利士人之地、凡歷七月、 | And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. |
| 2 | 非利士人招其祭司卜師曰、耶和華匱、何以處之、當用何物遣歸故土、請以示我、 | And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. |
| 3 | 曰、如欲遣以色列上帝之匱、勿使徒去、必獻補過之祭、乃可得醫、且知其手不離於爾之故、 | And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. |
| 4 | 曰、補過之祭、當獻何物、曰、金製之痔五、金製之鼠五、循非利士牧伯之數、蓋爾曹及牧伯、俱罹一災、 | Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. |
| 5 | 當作痔形、及害爾田之鼠形、且尊榮以色列之上帝、庶彼輕加其手於爾、及爾神、與爾地、 | Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. |
| 6 | 何剛愎乃心、如埃及人與法老之剛愎乎、上帝行奇事於其間、彼豈非釋其民、使之往乎、 | Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? |
| 7 | 今當備新車一、未嘗負軛、方字之牝牛二、繫牛於車、牽犢離之而歸、 | Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: |
| 8 | 以耶和華匱、載之於車、以汝所獻金器、爲補過之祭者、藏於櫝中、置之匱旁、遣之而去、 | And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. |
| 9 | 觀其匱若由其境之道而行、至伯示麥、則知加重禍於我者、乃耶和華、不然、則知擊我者非其手、乃我偶遇之、 | And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth–shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us. |
| 10 | 其人如言而行、取方字之牝牛二、繫之於車、禁其犢於家、 | And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: |
| 11 | 以耶和華匱、及藏金鼠金痔之形之櫝、咸載於車、 | And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods. |
| 12 | 牛徑往伯示麥道、行於通衢、且行且鳴、不偏於左、不偏於右、非利士牧伯隨之、至伯示麥界、 | And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth–shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth–shemesh. |
| 13 | 伯示麥人在谷刈麥、舉目見匱、則悅、 | And they of Beth–shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. |
| 14 | 車至伯示麥人約書亞田而止、田有巨石、遂劈車爲柴、獻其牛於耶和華爲燔祭、 | And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth–shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord. |
| 15 | 利未人取耶和華匱、與藏金器之櫝而下、置於巨石、是日伯示麥人、獻燔祭及他祭於耶和華、 | And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth–shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord. |
| 16 | 非利士五牧伯見此、卽日反以革倫、 | And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. |
| 17 | 非利士人所獻金痔於耶和華、爲補過之祭者、其數如左、亞實突一、迦薩一、亞實基倫一、迦特一、以革倫一、 | And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the Lord; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; |
| 18 | 亦獻金鼠、循非利士五牧伯所屬之邑、與其鄉里、爰及巨石、卽置耶和華匱之石、此石在伯示麥人約書亞田間、至今猶存、 | And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the Lord: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth–shemite. |
| 19 | 伯示麥人窺耶和華匱、耶和華擊之、死者七十、其人計有五萬、民因耶和華大行殺戮而悲、 | And he smote the men of Beth–shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. |
| 20 | 伯示麥人曰、此維聖之上帝耶和華、孰能立於其前、彼離我、當何往、 | And the men of Beth–shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us? |
| 21 | 遂遣人告基列耶琳居民曰、非利士人返耶和華匱、爾曹其下舁至爾所、 | And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath–jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; come ye down, and fetch it up to you. |
