1 我宗基督、言眞無誑、我是非之良、感於聖神、同爲之證、 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2 我有大憂、痛心不已、 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3 爲我兄弟骨肉之親、卽見絕於基督、亦所願也、 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4 彼固以色列人、得爲上帝子、有榮耀、諸約、律例、禮儀、及應許、 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5 列祖其祖也、依形軀言、基督由之而出、卽在萬有之上、永世當頌之上帝、阿們、 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6 非謂上帝之言廢也、蓋出於以色列者、非盡以色列人、 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7 亦非因其爲亞伯拉罕之裔、遂盡爲子、經云、由於以撒者、乃謂爲爾裔也、 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 是則形軀之子、非上帝子、惟應許之子稱爲裔也、 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9 其所許之言云、屆期我必至、撒拉將生子、 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10 不第此也、利百加由我祖以撒而妊、 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 二子未生、善惡未形、俾上帝選人之旨不移、非由乎行、乃由乎召之者、 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 遂諭利百加曰、長子必事幼子、 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 如經云、我愛雅各、而惡以掃、○ As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 然則將何言耶、上帝有不義乎、非也、 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 蓋諭摩西云、我所欲矜恤者矜恤之、欲憐憫者憐憫之、 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 是則非由志意、非由馳驅、乃由矜恤之上帝也、 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 蓋經諭法老云、我之興爾、特彰我能於爾、揚我名於天下、 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 是上帝隨所欲矜恤之、亦隨所欲剛愎之、○ Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 如是、爾必語我云、上帝何爲尚責人乎、孰旣逆其旨乎、 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 人乎、爾爲誰、反詰上帝耶、受造之物、豈謂造之者云、爾何爲若是造我乎、 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 陶人豈無權於泥、由一團而造器、一爲尊、一爲卑乎、 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22 若上帝欲彰其怒、示其能、則以恆忍、包容可怒之器、備以毀敗者、 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 且欲其豐富之榮、示於矜恤之器、備以獲榮者、 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 卽我儕蒙召之人、不第自猶太、亦自異邦、如是、尚何言哉、 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 何西阿書載上帝言云、我將稱非我民者爲我民、非蒙愛者爲蒙愛、 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26 昔於某地語人曰、爾非我民、將於斯地、稱爲維生上帝子、 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27 以賽亞指以色列呼曰、以色列衆子、其數雖如海沙、而得救者其遺餘耳、 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28 蓋主將踐其言於世、且果決而成之、 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29 如以賽亞曾言、若萬軍之主、未留餘種於我、則我儕必如所多瑪、猶蛾摩拉矣、○ And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30 然則將何言耶、異邦人未趨義而得義、卽由信之義也、 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 惟以色列人趨律之義而不及、 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 此何故耶、曰、不由於信、而由於行、乃蹶於躓人之石、 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 如經云、我以躓人之石、礙人之磐、置於錫安、信之者、必不啟羞也、 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
