Don't Be Foolish
My child, suppose you agree to pay the debt of someone, who cannot repay a loan.
My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
Then you are trapped by your own words, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
and you are now in the power of someone else. Here is what you should do: Go and beg for permission to call off the agreement. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
Do this before you fall asleep or even get sleepy. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
Save yourself, just as a deer or a bird tries to escape from a hunter. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
You lazy people can learn by watching an anthill. Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Ants don't have leaders, Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
but they store up food during harvest season. Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
How long will you lie there doing nothing at all? When are you going to get up and stop sleeping? How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Sleep a little. Doze a little. Fold your hands and twiddle your thumbs. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
Suddenly, everything is gone, as though it had been taken by an armed robber. So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Worthless liars go around A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
winking and giving signals to deceive others. He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
They are always thinking up something cruel and evil, and they stir up trouble. Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
But they will be struck by sudden disaster and left without a hope. Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
There are six or seven kinds of people the Lord doesn't like: These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Those who are too proud or tell lies or murder, A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
those who make evil plans or are quick to do wrong, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
those who tell lies in court or stir up trouble in a family. A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Obey the teaching of your parents— My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
always keep it in mind and never forget it. Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
Their teaching will guide you when you walk, protect you when you sleep, and talk to you when you are awake. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
The Law of the Lord is a lamp, and its teachings shine brightly. Correction and self-control will lead you through life. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
They will protect you from the flattering words of someone else's wife. To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
Don't let yourself be attracted by the charm and lovely eyes of someone like that. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
A woman who sells her love can be bought for as little as the price of a meal. But making love to another man's wife will cost you everything. For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
If you carry burning coals, you burn your clothes; Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
if you step on hot coals, you burn your feet. Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
And if you go to bed with another man's wife, you pay the price. So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
We don't put up with thieves, not even with one who steals for something to eat. Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
And thieves who get caught must pay back seven times what was stolen and lose everything. But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
But if you go to bed with another man's wife, you will destroy yourself by your own stupidity. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
You will be beaten and forever disgraced, A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
because a jealous husband can be furious and merciless when he takes revenge. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
He won't let you pay him off, no matter what you offer. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
