Job's Reply to Eliphaz / It's Impossible Job said:
But Job answered and said, |
It's impossible to weigh my misery and grief! | Oh that my grief were throughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
They outweigh the sand along the beach, and that's why I have spoken without thinking first. | For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up.
The fearsome arrows of God All-Powerful have filled my soul with their poison. | For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.
Do oxen and wild donkeys cry out in distress unless they are hungry? | Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?
What is food without salt? What is more tasteless than the white of an egg? | Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
That's how my food tastes, and my appetite is gone. * | The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.
How I wish that God would answer my prayer | Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
and do away with me. | Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!
Then I would be comforted, knowing that in all of my pain I have never disobeyed God. | Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Why should I patiently hope when my strength is gone? | What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life?
I am not strong as stone or bronze, | Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
and I have finally reached the end of my rope. | Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
My Friends, I Am Desperate My friends, I am desperate, and you should help me, even if I no longer respect God All-Powerful. *
To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty. |
But you are treacherous | My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away;
like streams that swell with melting snow, | Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid:
then suddenly disappear in the summer heat. | What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
I am like a caravan, lost in the desert while searching for water. | The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish.
Caravans from Tema and Sheba | The troops of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
thought they would find water. But they were disappointed, | They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.
just as I am with you. Only one look at my suffering, and you run away scared. | For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
What Have I Done Wrong? Have I ever asked any of you to give me a gift
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance? |
or to purchase my freedom from brutal enemies? | Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?
What have I done wrong? Show me, and I will keep quiet. | Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
The truth is always painful, but your arguments prove nothing. | How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?
Here I am desperate, and you consider my words as worthless as wind. | Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?
Why, you would sell an orphan or your own neighbor! | Yea, ye overwhelm the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend.
Look me straight in the eye; I won't lie to you. | Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
Stop accusing me falsely; my reputation is at stake. | Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it.
I know right from wrong, and I am not telling lies. | Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?
