The Continues / When Do Mountain Goats Give Birth? When do mountain goats and deer give birth? Have you been there when their young are born? *
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? |
How long are they pregnant | Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
before they deliver? | They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
Soon their young grow strong and then leave to be on their own. | Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
Who set wild donkeys free? | Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?
I alone help them survive in salty desert sand. | Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
They stay far from crowded cities and refuse to be tamed. | He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
Instead, they roam the hills, searching for pastureland. | The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
Would a wild ox agree to live in your barn and labor for you? | Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
Could you force him to plow or to drag a heavy log to smooth out the soil? | Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
Can you depend on him to use his great strength and do your heavy work? | Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
Can you trust him to harvest your grain or take it to your barn from the threshing place? | Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
An Ostrich Proudly Flaps Her Wings An ostrich proudly flaps her wings, but not because she loves her young.
Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? |
She abandons her eggs and lets the dusty ground keep them warm. | Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
And she doesn't seem to worry that the feet of an animal could crush them all. | And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
She treats her eggs as though they were not her own, unconcerned that her work might be for nothing. | She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
I myself made her foolish and without common sense. | Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
But once she starts running, she laughs at a rider on the fastest horse. | What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
Did You Give Horses Their Strength? Did you give horses their strength and the flowing hair along their necks?
Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? |
Did you make them able to jump like grasshoppers or to frighten people with their snorting? | Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
Before horses are ridden into battle, they paw at the ground, proud of their strength. | He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
Laughing at fear, they rush toward the fighting, | He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
while the weapons of their riders rattle and flash in the sun. | The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
Unable to stand still, they gallop eagerly into battle when trumpets blast. | He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
Stirred by the distant smells and sounds of war, they snort in reply to the trumpet. | He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
Did you teach hawks to fly south for the winter? * | Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
Did you train eagles to build | Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?
their nests on rocky cliffs, | She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
where they can look down to spot their next meal? | From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
Then their young gather to feast wherever the victim lies. | Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
