Elihu Speaks / Job, Listen to Me! Job, listen to me! Pay close attention. *
Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words. |
Everything I will say | Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
is true and sincere, | My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
just as surely as the Spirit of God All-Powerful gave me the breath of life. | The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
Now line up your arguments and prepare to face me. | If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.
We each were made from clay, and God has no favorites, | Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
so don't be afraid of me or what I might do. | Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
I Have Heard You Argue I have heard you argue
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, |
that you are innocent, guilty of nothing. | I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
You claim that God has made you his enemy, | Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
that he has bound your feet and blocked your path. | He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
But, Job, you're wrong— God is greater than any human. | Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
So why do you challenge God to answer you? | Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
God speaks in different ways, and we don't always recognize his voice. * | For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
Sometimes in the night, he uses terrifying dreams | In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
to give us warnings. | Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
God does this to make us turn from sin and pride | That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
and to protect us from being swept away to the world of the dead. | He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
Sometimes we are punished with a serious illness and aching joints. | He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
Merely the thought of our favorite food makes our stomachs sick, | So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.
and we become so skinny that our bones stick out. | His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
We feel death and the grave taking us in their grip. | Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
One of a thousand angels then comes to our rescue by saying we are innocent. | If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
The angel shows kindness, commanding death to release us, because the price was paid. | Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
Our health is restored, we feel young again, | His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth:
and we ask God to accept us. Then we joyfully worship God, and we are rewarded because we are innocent. | He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
When that happens, we tell everyone, “I sinned and did wrong, but God forgave me | He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
and rescued me from death! Now I will see the light.” | He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
God gives each of us chance after chance | Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,
to be saved from death and brought into the light that gives life. | To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.
So, Job, pay attention and don't interrupt, | Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.
though I would gladly listen to anything you say that proves you are right. | If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.
Otherwise, listen in silence to my wisdom. | If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.
