Job Continues / Young People Now Insult Me Young people now insult me, although their fathers would have been a disgrace to my sheep dogs.
But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock. |
And those who insult me are helpless themselves. | Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
They must claw the desert sand in the dark for something to satisfy their hunger. | For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
They gather tasteless shrubs for food and firewood, | Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.
and they are run out of towns, as though they were thieves. | They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)
Their only homes are ditches or holes between rocks, | To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
where they bray like donkeys gathering around shrubs. | Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
And like senseless donkeys they are chased away. | They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
Those Worthless Nobodies Those worthless nobodies make up jokes and songs to disgrace me.
And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword. |
They are hateful and keep their distance, even while spitting in my direction. | They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
God has destroyed me, and so they don't care what they do. | Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
Their attacks never stop, though I am defenseless, and my feet are trapped. | Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
Without any help, they prevent my escape, destroying me completely | They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
and leaving me crushed. | They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
Terror has me surrounded; my reputation and my riches have vanished like a cloud. | Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
I Am Sick at Heart I am sick at heart! Pain has taken its toll.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me. |
Night chews on my bones, causing endless torment, | My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
and God has shrunk my skin, choking me to death. | By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
I have been thrown in the dirt and now am dirt myself. | He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
I beg God for help, but there is no answer; and when I stand up, he simply stares. | I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
God has turned brutal, | Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
stirring up a windstorm to toss me about. | Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
Soon he will send me home to the world of the dead, where we all must go. | For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
No one refuses help to others, when disaster strikes. | Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
I mourned for the poor and those who suffered. | Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
But when I beg for relief and light, all I receive are disaster and darkness. | When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
My stomach is tied in knots; pain is my daily companion. | My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
My days are dark and gloomy and in the city council I stand and cry out, | I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
making mournful sounds like jackals and owls. | I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
My skin is so parched, that it peels right off, and my bones are burning. | My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
My only songs are sorrow and sadness. | My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
