Job's Reply to Zophar / If You Want To Offer Comfort Job said:
But Job answered and said, |
If you want to offer comfort, then listen to me. | Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
And when I have finished, you can start your insults all over again. | Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
My complaint is against God; that's why I am impatient. | As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
Just looking at me is enough to make you sick, | Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
and the very thought of myself fills me with disgust. | Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
Why do evil people live so long and gain such power? | Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
Why are they allowed to see their children grow up? | Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
They have no worries at home, and God never punishes them. | Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their cattle have lots of calves without ever losing one; | Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.
their children play and dance safely by themselves. | They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.
These people sing and celebrate to the sound of tambourines, small harps, and flutes, | They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
and they are successful, without a worry, until the day they die. | They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
Leave Us Alone! Those who are evil say to God All-Powerful, “Leave us alone! Don't bother us with your teachings.
Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. |
What do we gain from praying and worshiping you? | What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
We succeeded all on our own.” And so, I keep away from them and their evil schemes. | Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
How often does God become angry and send disaster and darkness to punish sinners? | How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
How often does he strike them like a windstorm that scatters straw? | They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
You say, “God will punish those sinners' children in place of those sinners.” But I say, “Let him punish those sinners themselves until they really feel it. | God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
Let God All-Powerful force them to drink their own destruction from the cup of his anger. | His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Because after they are dead, they won't care what happens to their children.” | For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
Who Can Tell God What To Do? Who can tell God what to do? He judges powerful rulers. *
Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high. |
Some of us die prosperous, | One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
enjoying good health, | His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
while others die in poverty, having known only pain. | And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
But we all end up dead, beneath a blanket of worms. | They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
My friends, I know that you are plotting against me. | Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.
You ask, “Where is the home of that important person who does so much evil?” | For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
Everyone, near and far, agrees | Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
that those who do wrong never suffer disaster, when God becomes angry. | That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
No one points out their sin or punishes them. | Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?
Then at their funerals, they are highly praised; | Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.
the earth welcomes them home, while crowds mourn. | The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
But empty, meaningless words are the comfort you offer me. | How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
