Zophar's Second Speech / Your Words Are Disturbing Zophar from Naamah said:
Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, |
Your words are disturbing; now I must speak. | Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.
You have accused and insulted me, and reason requires a reply. | I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.
Since the time of creation, everyone has known | Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,
that sinful people are happy for only a while. | That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?
Though their pride and power may reach to the sky, | Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;
they will disappear like dust, and those who knew them will wonder what happened. | Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?
They will be forgotten like a dream | He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.
and vanish from the sight of family and friends. | The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.
Their children will have to repay what the parents took from the poor. | His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods.
Indeed, the wicked will die and go to their graves in the prime of life. | His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.
Sinners Love the Taste of Sin Sinners love the taste of sin; they relish every bite
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; |
and swallow it slowly. | Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:
But their food will turn sour and poison their stomachs. | Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.
Then God will make them lose the wealth they gobbled up. | He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.
They will die from the fangs of poisonous snakes | He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper’s tongue shall slay him.
and never enjoy rivers flowing with milk and honey. | He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.
Their hard work will result in nothing gained, | That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein.
because they cheated the poor and took their homes. | Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not;
Greedy people want everything and are never satisfied. | Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.
But when nothing remains for them to grab, they will be nothing. | There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.
Once they have everything, distress and despair will strike them down, | In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.
and God will make them swallow his blazing anger. | When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.
While running from iron spears, they will be killed by arrows of bronze, | He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.
whose shining tips go straight through their bodies. They will be trapped by terror, | It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him.
and what they treasure most will be lost in the dark. God will send flames to destroy them in their tents with all their property. | All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.
The heavens and the earth will testify against them, | The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
and all their possessions will be dragged off when God becomes angry. | The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
This is what God has decided for those who are evil. | This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.
