Eliphaz's Second Speech / If You Had Any Sense Eliphaz from Teman said: *
Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, |
Job, if you had any sense, | Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
you would stop spreading all of this hot air. | Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
Your words are enough to make others turn from God and lead them to doubt. | Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
And your sinful, scheming mind is the source of all you say. | For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
I am not here as your judge; your own words are witnesses against you. | Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
Were you the first human? Are you older than the hills? | Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
Have you ever been present when God's council meets? Do you alone have wisdom? | Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
Do you know and understand something we don't? | What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
We have the benefit of wisdom older than your father. | With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
And you have been offered comforting words from God. Isn't this enough? | Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Your emotions are out of control, making you look fierce; | Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
that's why you attack God with everything you say. | That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
No human is pure and innocent, | What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
and neither are angels— not in the sight of God. If God doesn't trust his angels, | Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
what chance do humans have? We are so terribly evil that we thirst for sin. | How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
Just Listen to What I Know Just listen to what I know, and you will learn
I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; |
wisdom known by others since ancient times. | Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
Those who gained such insights also gained the land, and they were not influenced by foreign teachings. | Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
But suffering is in store each day for those who sin. | The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
Even in times of success, they constantly hear the threat of doom. | A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
Darkness, despair, and death are their destiny. | He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
They scrounge around for food, all the while dreading the approaching darkness. | He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
They are overcome with despair, like frightened soldiers facing a fearsome king in battle. | Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
This is because they rebelled against God All-Powerful | For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
and have attacked him with their weapons. | He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
They may be rich and fat, | Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
but they will live in the ruins of deserted towns. | And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
Their property and wealth will shrink and disappear. | He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
They won't escape the darkness, and the blazing breath of God will set their future aflame. * | He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
They have put their trust in something worthless; now they will become worthless | Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
like a date palm tree without a leaf. | It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
Or like vineyards or orchards whose blossoms and unripe fruit drop to the ground. | He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
Yes, the godless and the greedy will have nothing but flames feasting on their homes, | For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
because they are the parents of trouble and vicious lies. | They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
