Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth.
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. |
Jesus' disciples asked, “Teacher, why was this man born blind? Was it because he or his parents sinned?” | And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
“No, it wasn't!” Jesus answered. “But because of his blindness, you will see God work a miracle for him. | Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
As long as it is day, we must do what the one who sent me wants me to do. When night comes, no one can work. | I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.” | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground. He made some mud and smeared it on the man's eyes. | When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
Then he said, “Go wash off the mud in Siloam Pool.” The man went and washed in Siloam, which means “One Who Is Sent.” When he had washed off the mud, he could see. | And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
The man's neighbors and the people who had seen him begging wondered if he really could be the same man. | The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
Some of them said he was the same beggar, while others said he only looked like him. But he told them, “I am that man.” | Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
“Then how can you see?” they asked. | Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
He answered, “Someone named Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. He told me to go and wash it off in Siloam Pool. When I did, I could see.” | He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
“Where is he now?” they asked. “I don't know,” he answered. | Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
— | They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
The Pharisees Try To Find Out What Happened The day when Jesus made the mud and healed the man was a Sabbath. So the people took the man to the Pharisees.
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. |
They asked him how he was able to see, and he answered, “Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. Then after I washed it off, I could see.” | Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus doesn't come from God. If he did, he would not break the law of the Sabbath.” Others asked, “How could someone who is a sinner work such a miracle?” Since the Pharisees could not agree among themselves, | Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
they asked the man, “What do you say about this one who healed your eyes?” “He is a prophet!” the man told them. | They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
But the Jewish leaders would not believe that the man had once been blind. They sent for his parents | But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
and asked them, “Is this the son that you said was born blind? How can he now see?” | And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
The man's parents answered, “We are certain that he is our son, and we know that he was born blind. | His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. Ask him! He is old enough to speak for himself.” | But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
— | These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
The man's parents said this because they were afraid of their leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah. | Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
The leaders called the man back and said, “Swear by God to tell the truth! We know that Jesus is a sinner.” | Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!” | He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
“What did he do to you?” they asked. “How did he heal your eyes?” | Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
The man answered, “I have already told you once, and you refused to listen. Why do you want me to tell you again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” | He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
The leaders insulted the man and said, “You are his follower! We are followers of Moses. | Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.
We are sure God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where Jesus comes from.” | We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
“How strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know where he comes from. | The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
We know that God listens only to people who love and obey him. God doesn't listen to sinners. | Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
And this is the first time in history anyone has ever given sight to someone born blind. | Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
Jesus could not do anything unless he came from God.” | If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
The leaders told the man, “You have been a sinner since the day you were born! Do you think you can teach us anything?” Then they said, “You can never come back into any of our synagogues!” | They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he went and found the man. Then Jesus asked, “Do you have faith in the Son of Man?” | Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
He replied, “Sir, if you will tell me who he is, I will put my faith in him.” | He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
“You have already seen him,” Jesus answered, “and right now he is talking with you.” | And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
The man said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!” Then he worshiped Jesus. | And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
Jesus told him, “I came to judge the people of this world. I am here to give sight to the blind and to make blind everyone who can see.” | And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
When the Pharisees heard Jesus say this, they asked, “Are we blind?” | And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty. But now that you claim to see, you will keep on being guilty.” | Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
