Jesus Condemns the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law of Moses Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, |
The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses. | Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else. | All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
They pile heavy burdens on people's shoulders and won't lift a finger to help. | For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see. | But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues. | And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers. | And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. | But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Don't call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. | And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. | Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others. | But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored. | And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
— | But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won't go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
You are in for trouble! You are supposed to lead others, but you are blind. You teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the temple. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gold in the temple. | Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred? | Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
You also teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the altar. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gift on the altar. | And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
Are you blind? Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? | Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
Anyone who swears by the altar also swears by everything on it. | Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
And anyone who swears by the temple also swears by God, who lives there. | And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
To swear by heaven is the same as swearing by God's throne and by the one who sits on that throne. | And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your garden, such as mint, dill, and cumin. Yet you neglect the more important matters of the Law, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the important things you should have done, though you should not have left the others undone either. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
You blind leaders! You strain out a small fly but swallow a camel. | Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean. | Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You're like tombs that have been whitewashed. On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
That's what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good. | Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
You Pharisees and teachers are nothing but show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You build monuments for the prophets and decorate the tombs of good people. | Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
And you claim you would not have taken part with your ancestors in killing the prophets. | And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
But you prove you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets. | Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
So keep on doing everything they did. | Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
You are nothing but snakes and the children of snakes! How can you escape going to hell? | Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
I will send to you prophets and wise people and experts in the Law of Moses. You will kill them or nail them to a cross or beat them in your synagogues or chase them from town to town. | Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
That's why you will be held guilty for the murder of every good person, beginning with the good man Abel. This also includes Barachiah's son Zechariah, the man you murdered between the temple and the altar. | That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
I can promise that you people living today will be punished for all these things! (,) | Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Jesus Loves Jerusalem Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! |
And now your temple will be deserted. | Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
You won't see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” | For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
