1
Dead to Sin but Alive because of Christ
What should we say? Should we keep on sinning, so that God's gift of undeserved grace will show up even better?
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 No, we should not! If we are dead to sin, how can we go on sinning? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Don't you know that all who share in Christ Jesus by being baptized also share in his death? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 When we were baptized, we died and were buried with Christ. We were baptized, so we would live a new life, as Christ was raised to life by the glory of God the Father. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 If we shared in Jesus' death by being baptized, we will be raised to life with him. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 We know that the persons we used to be were nailed to the cross with Jesus. This was done, so our sinful bodies would no longer be the slaves of sin. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 We know sin doesn't have power over dead people. For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 As surely as we died with Christ, we believe we will also live with him. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 We know that death no longer has any power over Christ. He died and was raised to life, never again to die. Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 When Christ died, he died for sin once and for all. But now he is alive, and he lives only for God. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 In the same way, you must think of yourselves as dead to the power of sin. But Christ Jesus has given life to you, and you live for God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Don't let sin rule your body. After all, your body is bound to die, so don't obey its desires Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 or let any part of it become a slave of evil. Give yourselves to God, as people who have been raised from death to life. Make every part of your body a slave that pleases God. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 Don't let sin keep ruling your lives. You are ruled by God's undeserved grace and not by the Law. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15
Slaves Who Do What Pleases God
What does all this mean? Does it mean we are free to sin, because we are ruled by God's gift of undeserved grace and not by the Law? Certainly not!
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Don't you know that you are slaves of anyone you obey? You can be slaves of sin and die, or you can be obedient slaves of God and be acceptable to him. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 You used to be slaves of sin. But I thank God that with all your heart you followed the example set forth in the teaching you received. But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Now you are set free from sin and are slaves who please God. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I am using these everyday examples, because in some ways you are still weak. You used to let the different parts of your body be slaves of your evil thoughts. But now you must make every part of your body serve God, so that you will belong completely to him. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 When you were slaves of sin, you didn't have to please God. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 But what good did you receive from the things you did? All you have to show for them is your shame, and they lead to death. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 Now you have been set free from sin, and you are God's slaves. This will make you holy and will lead you to eternal life. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 Sin pays off with death. But God's gift is eternal life given by Jesus Christ our Lord. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
