What It Means To Be Acceptable to God By faith we have been made acceptable to God. And now, thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ, we have peace with God.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: |
Christ has also introduced us to God's gift of undeserved grace on which we now take our stand. So we are happy, as we look forward to sharing in the glory of God. | By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
But that's not all! We gladly suffer, because we know that suffering helps us to endure. | And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And endurance builds character, which gives us a hope | And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
that will never disappoint us. All of this happens because God has given us the Holy Spirit, who fills our hearts with his love. | And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Christ died for us at a time when we were helpless and sinful. | For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
No one is really willing to die for an honest person, though someone might be willing to die for a truly good person. | For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful. | But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
But there is more! Now that God has accepted us because Christ sacrificed his life's blood, we will also be kept safe from God's anger. | Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Even when we were God's enemies, he made peace with us, because his Son died for us. Yet something even greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, we will be saved by the life of his Son. | For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
And in addition to everything else, we are happy because God sent our Lord Jesus Christ to make peace with us. | And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
Adam and Christ Adam sinned, and that sin brought death into the world. Now everyone has sinned, and so everyone must die.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: |
Sin was in the world before the Law came. But no record of sin was kept, because there was no Law. | (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Yet death still had power over all who lived from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. This happened, though not everyone disobeyed a direct command from God, as Adam did. In some ways Adam is like Christ who came later. | Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
But the gift of God's undeserved grace was very different from Adam's sin. That one sin brought death to many others. Yet in an even greater way, Jesus Christ alone brought God's gift of undeserved grace to many people. | But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
There is a lot of difference between Adam's sin and God's gift. That one sin led to punishment. But God's gift made it possible for us to be acceptable to him, even though we have sinned many times. | And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
Death ruled like a king because Adam had sinned. But that cannot compare with what Jesus Christ has done. God has treated us with undeserved grace, and he has accepted us because of Jesus. And so we will live and rule like kings. | For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Everyone was going to be punished because Adam sinned. But because of the good thing that Christ has done, God accepts us and gives us the gift of life. | Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Adam disobeyed God and caused many others to be sinners. But Jesus obeyed him and will make many people acceptable to God. | For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
The Law came, so that the full power of sin could be seen. Yet where sin was powerful, God's gift of undeserved grace was even more powerful. | Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Sin ruled by means of death. But God's gift of grace now rules, and God has accepted us because of Jesus Christ our Lord. This means that we will have eternal life. | That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
