Please Others and Not Yourself If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord's followers whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves.
We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. |
We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them. | Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
Even Christ did not try to please himself. But as the Scriptures say, “The people who insulted you also insulted me.” | For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. | For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. | Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. | That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Good News Is for Jews and Gentiles Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you.
Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. |
I tell you that Christ came as a servant of the Jews to show that God has kept the promises he made to their famous ancestors. Christ also came, | Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
so that the Gentiles would praise God for being kind to them. It is just as the Scriptures say, “I will tell the nations about you, and I will sing praises to your name.” | And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
The Scriptures also say to the Gentiles, “Come and celebrate with God's people.” | And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.
Again the Scriptures say, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles. All you nations, come and worship him.” | And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
Isaiah says, “Someone from David's family will come to power. He will rule the nations, and they will put their hope in him.” | And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.
I pray that God, who gives hope, will bless you with complete happiness and peace because of your faith. And may the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope. | Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Paul's Work as a Missionary My friends, I am sure that you are very good and that you have all the knowledge you need to teach each other.
And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. |
But I have spoken to you plainly and have tried to remind you of some things. God treated me with undeserved grace! | Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God,
He chose me to be a servant of Christ Jesus for the Gentiles and to do the work of a priest in the service of his good news. God did this so that the Holy Spirit could make the Gentiles into a holy offering, pleasing to him. | That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
Because of Christ Jesus, I can take pride in my service for God. | I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.
In fact, all I will talk about is how Christ let me speak and work, so that the Gentiles would obey him. | For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed,
Indeed, I will tell how Christ worked miracles and wonders by the power of the Holy Spirit. I have preached the good news about him all the way from Jerusalem to Illyricum. | Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
But I have always tried to preach where people have never heard about Christ. I am like a builder who doesn't build on someone else's foundation. | Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation:
It is just as the Scriptures say, “All who haven't been told about him will see him, and those who haven't heard about him will understand.” | But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand.
Paul's Plan To Visit Rome My work has always kept me from coming to see you.
For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you. |
Now there is nothing left for me to do in this part of the world, and for years I have wanted to visit you. | But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you;
So I plan to stop off on my way to Spain. Then after a short, but refreshing, visit with you, I hope you will quickly send me on. | Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.
— | But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints.
I am now on my way to Jerusalem to deliver the money that the Lord's followers in Macedonia and Achaia collected for God's needy people. | For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
This is something they really wanted to do. But sharing their money with the Jews was also like paying back a debt, because the Jews had already shared their spiritual blessings with the Gentiles. | It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.
After I have safely delivered this money, I will visit you and then go on to Spain. | When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.
And when I do arrive in Rome, I know it will be with the full blessings of Christ. | And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.
My friends, by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the love that comes from the Holy Spirit, I beg you to pray sincerely with me and for me. | Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;
Pray that God will protect me from the unbelievers in Judea, and that his people in Jerusalem will be pleased with what I am doing. | That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;
Ask God to let me come to you and have a pleasant and refreshing visit. | That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.
I pray that God, who gives peace, will be with all of you. Amen. | Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
