Obey Rulers Obey the rulers who have authority over you. Only God can give authority to anyone, and he puts these rulers in their places of power.
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. |
People who oppose the authorities are opposing what God has done, and they will be punished. | Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
Rulers are a threat to evil people, not to good people. There is no need to be afraid of the authorities. Just do right, and they will praise you for it. | For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
After all, they are God's servants, and it is their duty to help you. If you do something wrong, you ought to be afraid, because these rulers have the right to punish you. They are God's servants who punish criminals to show how angry God is. | For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
But you should obey the rulers because you know it is the right thing to do, and not just because of God's anger. | Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
You must also pay your taxes. The authorities are God's servants, and it is their duty to take care of these matters. | For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
Pay all that you owe, whether it is taxes and fees or respect and honor. | Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Love Let love be your only debt! If you love others, you have done all that the Law demands.
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. |
In the Law there are many commands, such as, “Be faithful in marriage. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not want what belongs to others.” But all of these are summed up in the command that says, “Love others as much as you love yourself.” | For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
No one who loves others will harm them. So love is all that the Law demands. | Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
The Day When Christ Returns You know what sort of times we live in, and so you should live properly. It is time to wake up. You know that the day when we will be saved is nearer now than when we first put our faith in the Lord.
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. |
Night is almost over, and day will soon appear. We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light. | The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
So behave properly, as people do in the day. Don't go to wild parties or get drunk or be vulgar or indecent. Don't quarrel or be jealous. | Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires. | But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
