Jesus Is Alive Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared.
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. |
When they found the stone rolled away from the entrance, | And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
they went in. But they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus, | And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
and they did not know what to think. Suddenly two men in shining white clothes stood beside them. | And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
The women were afraid and bowed to the ground. But the men said, “Why are you looking in the place of the dead for someone who is alive? | And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
Jesus isn't here! He has been raised from death. Remember that while he was still in Galilee, he told you, | He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
‘The Son of Man will be handed over to sinners who will nail him to a cross. But three days later he will rise to life.’ ” | Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Then they remembered what Jesus had said. | And they remembered his words,
— | And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some other women were the ones who had gone to the tomb. When they returned, they told the eleven apostles and the others what had happened. | It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
The apostles thought it was all nonsense, and they would not believe. | And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
But Peter ran to the tomb. And when he stooped down and looked in, he saw only the burial clothes. Then he returned, wondering what had happened. (,) | Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples That same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to the village of Emmaus, which was about eleven kilometers from Jerusalem.
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. |
As they were talking and thinking about what had happened, | And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
Jesus came near and started walking along beside them. | And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
But they did not know who he was. | But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
Jesus asked them, “What were you talking about as you walked along?” The two of them stood there looking sad and gloomy. | And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
Then the one named Cleopas asked Jesus, “Are you the only person from Jerusalem who didn't know what was happening there these last few days?” | And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
“What do you mean?” Jesus asked. They answered: Those things that happened to Jesus from Nazareth. By what he did and said he showed that he was a powerful prophet, who pleased God and all the people. | And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
Then the chief priests and our leaders had him arrested and sentenced to die on a cross. | And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
We had hoped that he would be the one to set Israel free! But it has already been three days since all this happened. | But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Some women in our group surprised us. They had gone to the tomb early in the morning, | Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
but did not find the body of Jesus. They came back, saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. | And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
Some men from our group went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they didn't see Jesus either. | And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can't you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? | Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Didn't you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” | Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets. | And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
When the two of them came near the village where they were going, Jesus seemed to be going farther. | And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
They begged him, “Stay with us! It's already late, and the sun is going down.” So Jesus went into the house to stay with them. | But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
After Jesus sat down to eat, he took some bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then he gave it to them. | And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
At once they knew who he was, but he disappeared. | And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
They said to each other, “When he talked with us along the road and explained the Scriptures to us, didn't it warm our hearts?” | And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
So they got up and returned to Jerusalem. The two disciples found the eleven apostles and the others gathered together. | And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
And they learned from the group that the Lord was really alive and had appeared to Peter. | Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Then the disciples from Emmaus told what happened on the road and how they knew he was the Lord when he broke the bread. (; ; ; ) | And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
What Jesus' Followers Must Do While Jesus' disciples were talking about what had happened, Jesus appeared and greeted them.
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. |
They were frightened and terrified because they thought they were seeing a ghost. | But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
But Jesus said, “Why are you so frightened? Why do you doubt? | And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet and see who I am! Touch me and find out for yourselves. Ghosts don't have flesh and bones as you see I have.” | Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
After Jesus said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. | And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.
The disciples were so glad and amazed that they could not believe it. Jesus then asked them, “Do you have something to eat?” | And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
They gave him a piece of broiled fish. | And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
He took it and ate it as they watched. | And he took it, and did eat before them.
Jesus said to them, “While I was still with you, I told you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms had to happen.” | And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Then he helped them understand the Scriptures. | Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
He told them: The Scriptures say that the Messiah must suffer, then three days later he will rise from death. | And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
They also say that all people of every nation must be told in my name to turn to God, in order to be forgiven. So beginning in Jerusalem, | And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
you must tell everything that has happened. | And ye are witnesses of these things.
I will send you the one my Father has promised, but you must stay in the city until you are given power from heaven. (,; ) | And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
Jesus Returns to Heaven Jesus led his disciples out to Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them.
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. |
As he was doing this, he left and was taken up to heaven. | And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
After his disciples had worshiped him, they returned to Jerusalem and were very happy. | And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
They spent their time in the temple, praising God. | And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
