Food Offered to Idols In your letter you asked me about food offered to idols. All of us know something about this subject. But knowledge makes us proud of ourselves, while love makes us helpful to others.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. |
In fact, people who think they know so much don't know anything at all. | And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
But God has no doubts about who loves him. | But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
Even though food is offered to idols, we know that none of the idols in this world are alive. After all, there is only one God. | As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
Many things in heaven and on earth are called gods and lords, but none of them really are gods or lords. | For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
We have only one God, and he is the Father. He created everything, and we live for him. Jesus Christ is our only Lord. Everything was made by him, and by him life was given to us. | But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Not everyone knows these things. In fact, many people have grown up with the belief that idols have life in them. So when they eat meat offered to idols, they are bothered by a weak conscience. | Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
But food doesn't bring us any closer to God. We are no worse off if we don't eat, and we are no better off if we do. | But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
Don't cause problems for someone with a weak conscience, just because you have the right to eat anything. | But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
You know all this, and so it doesn't bother you to eat in the temple of an idol. But suppose a person with a weak conscience sees you and decides to eat food that has been offered to idols. | For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
Then what you know has destroyed someone Christ died for. | And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
When you sin by hurting a follower with a weak conscience, you sin against Christ. | But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
So if I hurt one of the Lord's followers by what I eat, I will never eat meat as long as I live. | Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
