Questions about Marriage
Now I will answer the questions you asked in your letter. You asked, “Is it best for people not to marry?”
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
Well, having your own husband or wife should keep you from doing something immoral. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
Husbands and wives should be fair with each other about having sex. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
A wife belongs to her husband instead of to herself, and a husband belongs to his wife instead of to himself. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
So don't refuse sex to each other, unless you agree not to have sex for a little while, in order to spend time in prayer. Then Satan won't be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
In my opinion that is what should be done, though I don't know of anything the Lord said about this matter. But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.
I wish all of you were like me, but God has given different gifts to each of us. For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
My advice for the unmarried and for widows is that it is acceptable for them to remain single, just as I am. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.
But if you don't have enough self-control, then go ahead and get married. After all, it is better to marry than to burn with desire. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
I instruct married couples to stay together, and this is exactly what the Lord himself taught. A wife who leaves her husband And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
should either stay single or go back to her husband. And a husband should not leave his wife. But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
I don't know of anything else the Lord said about marriage. All I can do is to give you my own advice. If your wife isn't a follower of the Lord, but is willing to stay with you, don't divorce her. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
If your husband isn't a follower, but is willing to stay with you, don't divorce him. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
Your husband or wife who isn't a follower is made holy by having you as a partner. This also makes your children holy and keeps them from being unclean in God's sight. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
If your husband or wife isn't a follower of the Lord and decides to divorce you, then you should agree to it. You are no longer bound to that person. After all, God chose you and wants you to live at peace. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
And besides, how do you know if you will be able to save your husband or wife who isn't a follower? For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

Obeying the Lord at All Times
In every church I tell the people to stay as they were when the Lord Jesus chose them and God called them to be his own. Now I say the same thing to you.
But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
If you are already circumcised, don't try to change it. If you are not circumcised, don't get circumcised. Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.
Being circumcised or uncircumcised isn't really what matters. The important thing is to obey God's commands. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
So don't try to change what you were when God chose you. Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
Are you a slave? Don't let that bother you. But if you can win your freedom, you should. Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
When the Lord chooses slaves, they become his free people. And when he chooses free people, they become slaves of Christ. For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant.
God paid a great price for you. So don't become slaves of anyone else. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
Stay what you were when God chose you. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.

Unmarried People
I don't know of anything the Lord said about people who have never been married. But I will tell you what I think. And you can trust me, because the Lord has treated me with kindness.
Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
We are now going through hard times, and I think it is best for you to stay as you are. I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.
If you are married, stay married. If you are not married, don't try to get married. Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.
It isn't wrong to marry, even if you have never been married before. But those who marry will have a lot of trouble, and I want to protect you from this. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.
My friends, what I mean is that the Lord will soon come, and it won't matter if you are married or not. But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
It will be all the same if you are crying or laughing, or if you are buying or are completely broke. And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;
It won't make any difference how much good you are getting from this world or how much you like it. This world as we know it is now passing away. And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
I want all of you to be free from worry. An unmarried man worries about how to please the Lord. But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
But a married man has more worries. He must worry about the things of this world, because he wants to please his wife. But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
So he is pulled in two directions. Unmarried women and women who have never been married worry only about pleasing the Lord, and they keep their bodies and minds pure. But a married woman worries about the things of this world, because she wants to please her husband. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
What I am saying is for your own good—it isn't to limit your freedom. I want to help you to live right and to love the Lord above all else. And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
But suppose you are engaged to someone old enough to be married, and you want her so much that all you can think about is getting married. Then go ahead and marry. There is nothing wrong with that. But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
But it is better to have self-control and to make up your mind not to marry. Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
It is perfectly all right to marry, but it is better not to get married at all. So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
A wife should stay married to her husband until he dies. Then she is free to marry again, but only to a man who is a follower of the Lord. The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
However, I think I am obeying God's Spirit when I say she would be happier to stay single. But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
