| 1 | I den tiden kom Johannes Döparen, och predikade i öknene, i Judeska landet; | In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, |
| 2 | Och sade: Görer bättring; himmelriket är kommet hardt när. | And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
| 3 | Och han är den som Esaias Propheten talade om, och sade: Ens ropandes röst är i öknene: Bereder HERrans wäg, görer hans stigar rätta. | For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. |
| 4 | Men Johannes hade kläder af camelahår, och en lädergjording om sina länder; hans mat war gräshoppor och wildhannog. | And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. |
| 5 | Då gick Jerusalems stad ut til honom, och hela Judeska landet, och all land som ligga utmed Jordan: | Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, |
| 6 | Och läto döpa sig af honom i Jordan, och bekände sina synder. | And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. |
| 7 | Då han såg många utaf de Phariseer och Sadduceer komma til sin döpelse, sade han til dem: I huggormars afföda, ho hafwer eder föregifwit, at I skolen undfly den tillkommande wrede? | But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
| 8 | Görer fördenskull sådana frukt, som bättring tillhörer | Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: |
| 9 | Och tänker icke, at I wiljen säga wid eder sjelfwa: Vi hafwom Abraham till fader; ty jag säger eder, at Gud är mägtig uppwäcka af dessa stenar Abrahe barn. | And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |
| 10 | Nu är ock yxen satt till rotena på trän; derföre hwart och ett trä, som icke gör goda frukt, blifwer afhugget och kastadt i elden. | And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
| 11 | Jag döper eder i watn, til bättring; men den efter mig kommer, är starkare än jag, hwilkens skor jag icke är wärdig at bära; han skall döpa eder med den Heliga Anda, och med eld. | I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: |
| 12 | Och han hafwer sina kastoskofwel i sine hand, och han skall rensa sin loga, och han skall församla sitt hwete i ladona; men agnarna skall han uppbränna i ewinnerlig eld. | Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. |
| 13 | Då kom JEsus af Galileen til Jordan, til Johannes, at han skulle låta döpa sig af honom. | Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. |
| 14 | Men Johannes förwägrade honom, och sade: Mig behöfwes, att jag worde döpt af dig; och du kommer til mig? | But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? |
| 15 | Då swarade JEsus, och sade til honom: Låt det nu så ske; så bör det sig wara med oss, att wi uppfylle alla rättfärdighet. Då tillstadde han honom det. | And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. |
| 16 | Och när Jesus war döpt, steg han strax up af watnet; och si, då wardt honom himmelen öpnad, och han såg Guds Anda nederfara, som en dufwa, och komma öfwer honom. | And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: |
| 17 | Och si, en röst af himmelen sade: Denne är min käre Son, i hwilkom jag hafwer ett godt behag. | And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. |
