1	야곱이 라반의 집에 도착하다 야곱이 줄곧 길을 걸어서, 드디어 동방 사람들이 사는 땅에 이르렀다.	Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
2	거기 들에 우물이 있는데, 그 곁에 양 떼 세 무리가 엎드려 있는 것이 보였다. 그 곳은, 목자들이 양 떼에게 물을 먹이는 우물인데, 그 우물 아귀는 큰 돌로 늘 덮여 있어서,	And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.
3	양 떼가 다 모이면, 목자들이 우물 아귀에서 그 돌을 굴려내어 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고, 다 먹인 다음에 다시 돌을 굴려서, 우물 아귀를 덮고는 하였다.	And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
4	야곱이 그 목자들에게 물었다. "여보십시오, 어디에서 오시는 길입니까?" 그들이 대답하였다. "우리는 하란에서 오는 길입니다."	And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
5	야곱이 그들에게 또 물었다. "나홀이라는 분의 손자인 라반이라는 분을 아십니까?" 그들이 대답하였다. "아, 예, 우리는 그를 잘 압니다."	And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
6	야곱이 또 그들에게 물었다. "그분이 평안하게 지내십니까?" 그들이 대답하였다. "잘 삽니다. 아, 마침, 저기 그의 딸 라헬이 양 떼를 몰고 옵니다."	And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
7	야곱이 말하였다. "아직 해가 한창인데, 아직은 양 떼가 모일 때가 아닌 것 같은데, 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고, 다시 풀을 뜯기러 나가야 하지 않습니까?"	And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
8	그들이 대답하였다. "그렇지 않습니다. 양 떼가 다 모일 때까지 기다렸다가, 양 떼가 다 모이면, 우물 아귀의 돌을 굴려내고서, 양 떼에게 물을 먹입니다."	And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
9	야곱이 목자들과 말하고 있는 사이에, 라헬이 아버지의 양 떼를 이끌고 왔다. 라헬은 양 떼를 치는 목동이다.	And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them.
10	야곱이 외삼촌 라반의 딸 라헬과 그가 치는 외삼촌의 양 떼를 보고, 우물 아귀에서 돌을 굴려내어, 외삼촌의 양 떼에게 물을 먹였다.	And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
11	그러고 나서, 야곱은 라헬에게 입을 맞추고, 기쁜 나머지 큰소리로 울면서,	And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12	라헬의 아버지가 자기의 외삼촌이라는 것과, 자기가 리브가의 아들이라는 것을 라헬에게 말하였다. 라헬이 달려가서, 아버지에게 이 사실을 말하였다.	And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father.
13	라반은 누이의 아들 야곱이 왔다는 말을 듣고서, 그를 만나러 곧장 달려와, 그를 보자마자 껴안고서, 입을 맞추고, 자기 집으로 데리고 갔다. 야곱은 지금까지 있었던 일들을 라반에게 다 말하였다.	And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
14	말을 듣고 난 라반은 야곱에게 말하였다. "너는 나와 한 피붙이이다." 야곱이 한 달을 라반의 집에 머물러 있을 때에,	And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
15	야곱이 라반의 집안일을 하다 라반이 그에게 말하였다. "네가 나의 조카이긴 하다만, 나의 일을 거저 할 수는 없지 않느냐? 너에게 어떻게 보수를 주면 좋을지, 너의 말을 좀 들어 보자."	And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
16	라반에게는, 두 딸이 있었다. 맏딸의 이름은 레아이고, 둘째 딸의 이름은 라헬이다.	And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17	레아는 눈매가 부드러웠으며, 라헬은 몸매가 아름답고, 용모도 예뻤다.	Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
18	야곱은 라헬을 더 사랑하였다. 그래서 그는 "제가 칠 년 동안 외삼촌 일을 해 드릴 터이니, 그 때에 가서, 외삼촌의 작은 딸 라헬과 결혼하게 해주십시오" 하고 말하였다.	And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
19	그러자 라반이 말하였다. "그 아이를 다른 사람과 짝지어 주는 것보다, 너에게 짝지어 주는 것이 더 낫겠다. 그러면 여기서 나와 함께 살자."	And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
20	야곱은 라헬을 아내로 맞으려고 칠 년 동안이나 일을 하였지만, 라헬을 사랑하기 때문에, 칠 년이라는 세월을 마치 며칠같이 느꼈다.	And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
21	칠 년이 지난 뒤에, 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. "약속한 기한이 다 되었습니다. 이제 장가를 들게 해주십시오. 라헬과 결혼하겠습니다."	And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
22	라반이 그 고장 사람들을 다 청해 놓고, 잔치를 베풀었다.	And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23	밤이 되었을 때에, 라반은 큰 딸 레아를 데려다가 신방으로 들여보냈는데, 야곱은 그것도 모르고, 레아와 동침하였다.	And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
24	라반은 여종 실바를 자기 딸 레아에게 몸종으로 주었다.	And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.
25	아침이 되어서 야곱이 눈을 떠 보니, 레아가 아닌가! 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. "외삼촌께서 저에게 이러실 수가 있습니까? 제가 그 동안 라헬에게 장가를 들려고 외삼촌 일을 해 드린 것이 아닙니까? 외삼촌께서 왜 저를 속이셨습니까?"	And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
26	라반이 대답하였다. "큰 딸을 두고서 작은 딸부터 시집보내는 것은, 이 고장의 법이 아닐세.	And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27	그러니 이레 동안 초례 기간을 채우게. 그런 다음에, 작은 아이도 자네에게 주겠네. 그 대신에 자네는, 또 칠 년 동안, 내가 맡기는 일을 해야 하네."	Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
28	야곱은 그렇게 하였다. 그가 레아와 이레 동안 지내고 나니, 라반은 자기 딸 라헬을 그에게 아내로 주었다.	And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
29	라반은 여종 빌하를 자기 딸 라헬에게 몸종으로 주었다.	And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
30	야곱이 라헬과 동침하였다. 야곱은 레아보다, 라헬을 더 사랑하였다. 그는 또다시 칠 년 동안 라반의 일을 하였다.	And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
31	야곱에게 아이들이 생기다 주께서는, 레아가 남편의 사랑을 받지 못하는 것을 보시고, 레아의 태를 열어 주셨다. 라헬은 임신을 하지 못하였으나	And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
32	레아는 마침내 임신을 하여 아들을 낳았다. 그는 속으로 "주께서 나의 고통을 살피시고, 나에게 아들을 주셨구나. 이제는 남편도 나를 사랑하겠지" 하면서, 아기 이름을 르우벤이라고 하였다.	And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
33	그가 또 임신을 하여 아들을 낳았다. 그는 속으로 "주께서, 내가 남편의 사랑을 받지 못하여 하소연하는 소리를 들으시고, 이렇게 또 아들을 주셨구나" 하면서, 아이 이름을 시므온이라고 하였다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.
34	그가 또 임신을 하여 아들을 낳았다. 그는 속으로 "내가 아들을 셋이나 낳았으니, 이제는 남편도 별 수 없이 나에게 단단히 매이겠지" 하면서, 아이 이름을 레위라고 하였다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
35	그가 또 임신을 하여 아들을 낳았다. 그는 속으로 "이제야말로 내가 주를 찬양하겠다" 하면서, 아이 이름을 유다라고 하였다. 레아의 출산이 그쳤다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
