1	도피성(민 35:9-28; 수 20:1-9) "주 너희의 하나님이, 너희에게 주시기로 한 그 땅, 거기에 살고 있는 원주민을 주 너희의 하나님이 멸망시키시고, 너희가 그들을 쫓아내어, 그 성읍과 집에서 살게 될 때에,	When the Lord thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the Lord thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
2	너희는 주 너희의 하나님이 너희에게 차지하라고 주신 땅에서 성읍 셋을 따로 구별하여 놓아야 한다.	Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it.
3	주 너희의 하나님이 너희에게 주신 땅을 세 영역으로 구분하여 길을 닦아, 모든 살인자가 그 곳으로 피신할 수 있게 하여라.	Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
4	살인자가 구별된 성읍으로 도피하여 살 수 있는 경우는 다음과 같다. 일찍이 미워한 일이 없는 이웃을 뜻하지 않게 죽였거나,	And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
5	어떤 사람이 이웃과 함께 나무하러 숲 속으로 들어가서 나무를 찍다가, 도끼가 자루에서 빠져 나가 친구를 쳐서, 그가 죽었을 경우에, 죽인 그 사람이 그 구별된 세 성읍 가운데 한 곳으로 피신하면, 살 수가 있다.	As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
6	도피성은, 평소에 이웃을 미워한 일이 없는 사람이 실수로 이웃을 죽게 하였을 때에 자기의 생명을 구할 수 있는 곳이므로, 그 곳까지의 거리가 너무 멀면, 피살자의 친척이 복수심에 불타서 살인자를 따라가서 죽일 터이니, 거리가 너무 멀어서는 안 된다.	Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7	내가 세 성읍을 따로 떼어 놓으라고 너희에게 명령한 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.	Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
8	주 너희의 하나님이, 너희의 조상에게 맹세하신 대로, 너희 땅의 경계를 넓혀 주시고 너희의 조상에게 약속한 모든 땅을 너희에게 주실 때에는,	And if the Lord thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
9	또 내가 오늘 너희에게 명하는 이 모든 명령을 너희가 성심껏 지키고, 주 너희의 하나님을 사랑하며, 그가 가르쳐 주신 길을 잘 따라갈 때에는, 이 세 성읍 말고 또 다른 세 성읍을 구별해야 한다.	If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the Lord thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
10	그리하여 주 너희의 하나님이 너희에게 유산으로 주신 땅에서는, 죄 없는 사람이 살인죄를 지고 죽는 일이 없도록 하여야 한다. 그러면 살인죄 때문에 너희가 책임을 지는 일은 없을 것이다.	That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11	그러나 어떤 사람이 그의 이웃을 미워하여서, 해치려고 숨었다가 일어나 이웃을 덮쳐, 그 생명에 치명상을 입혀 죽게 하고, 이 여러 성읍 가운데 한 곳으로 피신하면,	But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
12	그가 살던 성읍의 장로들이 사람을 보내어, 그를 거기에서 붙잡아다가, 복수자의 손에 넘겨 주어, 죽이게 하여야 한다.	Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13	너희는 그런 사람에게 동정을 베풀어서는 안 된다. 이스라엘 안에서, 죄 없는 사람이 죽임을 당하는 일이 없어야만, 너희가 복을 받을 것이다."	Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14	이웃의 경계를 침범하지 말 것 "너희는, 주 하나님이 너희에게 유산으로 주어 차지한 땅에서, 이미 조상이 그어 놓은 너희 이웃의 경계선을 옮기지 말아라."	Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15	증인에 대한 규정 "어떤 잘못이나 어떤 범죄라도, 한 사람의 증언만으로는 판정할 수 없다. 두세 사람의 증언이 있어야만 그 일을 확정할 수 있다.	One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16	남에게 죄를 뒤집어 씌우려는 나쁜 증인이 나타나면,	If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17	소송을 하는 양쪽은 주 앞에 나아와, 그 당시의 제사장들과 재판관 앞에 서서 재판을 받아야 한다.	Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18	재판관들은 자세히 조사한 뒤에, 그 증인이 그 이웃에게 거짓 증언을 한 것이 판명되거든,	And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19	그 증인이 그 이웃을 해치려고 마음 먹었던 대로 그 이웃에게 갚아 주어야 한다. 그래서 너희 가운데서 그런 악의 뿌리를 뽑아야 한다.	Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20	그러면 남은 사람들이 이 말을 듣고 두려워하여서, 이런 악한 일을 하는 사람이 너희 가운데서 다시는 생기지 않을 것이다.	And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
21	너희는 이런 일에 동정을 베풀어서는 안 된다. 목숨은 목숨으로, 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로, 손은 손으로, 발은 발로 갚아라."	And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
