1	기럇여아림 사람들이 와서 주의 궤를 옮겨, 언덕 위에 있는 아비나답의 집에 들여 놓고, 그의 아들 엘리아살을 거룩히 구별해 세워서, 주의 궤를 지키게 하였다.	And the men of Kirjath–jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
2	사무엘이 이스라엘을 다스리다 궤가 기럇여아림에 머문 날로부터 약 스무 해 동안, 오랜 세월이 지났다. 이 기간에 이스라엘의 온 족속은 주를 사모하였다.	And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath–jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3	사무엘이 이스라엘 온 족속에게 말하였다. "너희가 온전한 마음으로 주께 돌아오려거든, 이방의 신들과 아스다롯 여신상들을 없애 버리고, 주께만 마음을 두고 그분만을 섬겨라. 그러면 주께서 너희를 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져 주실 것이다."	And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
4	이 말을 듣고 이스라엘 자손이 바알과 아스다롯 신상들을 없애 버리고, 주만을 섬겼다.	Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
5	그 때에 사무엘이 이스라엘 사람들을 모두 미스바로 모이게 하였다. 그들의 죄를 용서하여 달라고 주께 기도를 드리려는 것이었다.	And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
6	그들은 미스바에 모여서 물을 길어다가, 그것을 제물로 삼아 주 앞에 쏟아붓고, 그 날 종일 금식하였다. 그리고 거기에서 "우리가 주를 거역하여 죄를 지었습니다!" 하고 고백하였다. 미스바는, 사무엘이 이스라엘 자손 사이의 다툼을 중재하던 곳이다.	And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
7	이스라엘 자손이 미스바에 모였다는 소식이 블레셋 사람에게 들어가니, 블레셋 통치자들이 이스라엘을 치려고 올라왔다. 이스라엘 자손은 그 소식을 듣고, 블레셋 사람들을 두려워하였다.	And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8	그들이 사무엘에게 가서 "주 우리의 하나님이 우리를 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져내 주시도록, 쉬지 말고 기도하여 주시기 바랍니다" 하고 간청하였다.	And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
9	사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린 양을 한 마리 가져다가 주께 온전한 번제물로 바치고, 이스라엘을 구원하여 달라고 주께 부르짖으니, 주께서 그의 기도를 들어 주셨다.	And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him.
10	사무엘이 번제를 드리고 있을 때에, 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 다가왔다. 그러나 그 때에 주께서 큰 천둥소리를 일으켜 블레셋 사람을 당황하게 하셨으므로, 그들이 이스라엘에게 패하였다.	And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.
11	이스라엘 사람이 미스바에서 나와서, 블레셋 사람을 벳갈 아래까지 뒤쫓으면서 무찔렀다.	And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth–car.
12	사무엘이 돌을 하나 가져다가 미스바와 센 사이에 놓고 "우리가 여기에 이르기까지 주께서 우리를 도와 주셨다!" 하고 말하면서, 그 돌의 이름을 에벤에셀이라고 지었다.	Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben–ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
13	그래서 블레셋 사람들이 무릎을 꿇고, 다시는 이스라엘 지역으로 들어오지 않았다. 사무엘이 살아 있는 동안에는 주의 손이 블레셋 사람을 막아 주셨다.	So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14	블레셋 사람이 이스라엘에게서 빼앗아 간 성읍들, 곧 에그론과 가드 사이에 있는 성읍들도 이스라엘에 되돌아왔으며, 성읍에 딸린 지역도 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람의 손에서 되찾았다. 이스라엘은 또 아모리 사람과도 평화롭게 지냈다.	And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15	사무엘은 살아 있는 동안 이스라엘을 다스렸다.	And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16	그는 해마다 베델과 길갈과 미스바 지역을 돌면서, 그 모든 곳에서 이스라엘 사람 사이의 분쟁을 중재하였다.	And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth–el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
17	그리고는 자기 집이 있는 라마로 돌아와서, 거기에서도 이스라엘의 사사로 활동하였다. 그는 라마에 주의 제단을 쌓았다.	And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord.
