1	주께서 사무엘에게 나타나시다 어린 사무엘이 엘리 곁에서 주를 섬기고 있을 때이다. 그 때에는 주께서 말씀을 해주시는 일이 드물었고, 환상도 자주 나타나지 않았다.	And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2	어느 날 밤, 엘리가 잠자리에 누워 있을 때이다. 그는 이미 눈이 어두워져서 잘 볼 수가 없었다.	And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3	사무엘은 하나님의 궤가 있는 주의 성전에서 잠자리에 누워 있었다. 이른 새벽, 하나님의 등불이 아직 환하게 밝혀져 있을 때에,	And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4	주께서 "사무엘아, 사무엘아!" 하고 부르셨다. 그는 "제가 여기 있습니다" 하고 대답하고서,	That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5	곧 엘리에게 달려가서 "부르셨습니까? 제가 여기 왔습니다" 하고 말하였다. 그러나 엘리는 "나는 너를 부르지 않았다. 도로 가서 누워라" 하고 말하였다. 사무엘이 다시 가서 누웠다.	And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6	주께서 다시 "사무엘아!" 하고 부르셨다. 사무엘이 일어나 엘리에게 가서 "부르셨습니까? 제가 여기 왔습니다" 하고 말하였다. 그러나 엘리는 "얘야, 나는 너를 부르지 않았다. 도로 가서 누워라" 하고 말하였다.	And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7	이 때까지 사무엘은 주를 알지 못하였고, 주의 말씀이 그에게 나타난 적도 없었다.	Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him.
8	주께서 사무엘을 세 번째 부르셨다. 사무엘이 일어나 엘리에게 가서 "부르셨습니까? 제가 여기 왔습니다" 하고 말하였다. 그제야 엘리는, 주께서 그 소년을 부르신다는 것을 깨닫고,	And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
9	사무엘에게 일러주었다. "가서 누워 있거라. 누가 너를 부르거든 '주님, 말씀하십시오. 주의 종이 듣고 있습니다' 하고 대답하여라." 사무엘이 자리로 돌아가서 누웠다.	Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10	그런 뒤에 주께서 다시 찾아와 곁에 서서, 조금 전처럼 "사무엘아, 사무엘아!" 하고 부르셨다. 사무엘은 "말씀하십시오. 주님의 종이 듣고 있습니다" 하고 대답하였다.	And the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
11	주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. "내가 이제 이스라엘에서 어떤 일을 하려고 한다. 그것을 듣는 사람마다 무서워서 귀까지 멍멍해질 것이다.	And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12	때가 오면, 내가 엘리의 집을 두고 말한 모든 것을, 처음부터 끝까지 다 이루겠다.	In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13	엘리는, 자기의 아들들이 스스로 저주받을 일을 하는 줄 알면서도, 자식들을 책망하지 않았다. 그 죄를 그는 이미 알고 있다. 그래서 나는, 그의 집을 심판하여 영영 없애 버리겠다고, 그에게 알려 주었다.	For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14	그러므로 나는 엘리의 집을 두고 맹세한다. 엘리의 집 죄악은, 제물이나 예물로도 영영 씻지 못할 것이다."	And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
15	사무엘은 아침이 밝을 때까지 누워 있다가, 주의 집 문들을 열었다. 그러나 사무엘은 자기가 환상으로 보고 들은 것을 엘리에게 알리기를 두려워하였다.	And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.
16	엘리가 사무엘을 불렀다. 그는 "내 아들 사무엘아!" 하고 불렀다. "예, 제가 여기에 있습니다" 하고 사무엘이 대답하였다.	Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
17	엘리가 물었다. "주께서 너에게 무슨 말씀을 하시더냐? 나에게 아무것도 숨기지 말아라. 주께서 너에게 하신 말씀 가운데서 한 마디라도 나에게 숨기면, 하나님이 너에게 심한 벌을 내리고 또 내리실 것이다."	And he said, What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
18	사무엘은 그에게 하나도 숨기지 않고 모든 것을 말하였다. 엘리가 말하였다. "그분은 주님이시다! 그분께서는 뜻하신 대로 하실 것이다."	And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.
19	사무엘이 자랄 때에, 주께서 그와 함께 계셔서, 사무엘이 한 말이 하나도 어긋나지 않고 다 이루어지게 하셨다.	And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20	그리하여 단에서 브엘세바까지 온 이스라엘은, 사무엘이, 주께서 세우신 예언자임을 알게 되었다.	And all Israel from Dan even to Beer–sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord.
21	주께서는 실로에서 계속하여 자신을 나타내셨다. 거기에서 주께서는 사무엘에게 나타나셔서 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
